April Event Raises Money for Local Health Programs
The 2nd Annual Wolf River Sturgeon Shuffle is on the books and organizers are still beaming over the community response. “It far exceeded our expectations,” said Jim Ziegler, event co-chair and of Wolf River Veterinarian Clinic, adding that the April 28 event out-did participation and fundraising goals from last year.
There were 229 registered participants and 340 people attended the event, which raised over $10,000. The funds will benefit the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation (WRAHF), which supports New London Family Medical Center (NLFMC) and the communities it serves. Last year’s money helped support a bike safety clinic, Safe Sitter program and “You Grow Girl,” a self-esteem and wellness program designed to empower adolescent girls.
The 5-mile and 2-mile road run and walk took off at New London Middle School and followed New London’s Wolf River Sturgeon Trail. The “You Grow Girls” of Clintonville Middle School were the Honorary Chairs and led the race.
Team Bemis received both the Sturgeon Team Challenge Award for the most participants and the Sturgeon Trophy for the most funds raised by a team. The top three finishers in each age category were presented with a unique hand crafted mug, created by New London artisan Bob Smith.
Ziegler hopes next year’s race will grow to reach 500 participants. “It’s a goal I’m going to work toward,” he said.
