Chicago’s Second City Troupe Returns for ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’
Studies show that laughing is good for your health and there will be plenty to go around on March 8 when Chicago’s legendary comedy troupe, The Second City, performs at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center to benefit the Appleton Medical Center and Community Hospice Foundations.
“Laughter is the Best Medicine: The Laughing Matters Tour” will feature some of Second City’s best sketches, songs and improvisations from the group’s 45-year history. The majority of ticket sales from the event will be directly used to make improvements to Appleton Medical Center’s Guest House and the Cherry Meadows Hospice Residence.
Tickets for “Laughter is the Best Medicine” are on sale now. Tickets are $25 each when purchased in person at the Fox Cities performing Arts Center. Tickets can also be purchased online through Ticketmaster or over the phone by calling the PAC at (920) 730-3760. Processing fees apply when buying online or by phone.
Last winter, a performance by Second City raised $49,000 for the foundations.
“The Appleton Medical Center and Community Hospice Foundations are partnering together to raise funds to help people who are facing a very difficult time and ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’ is a great way for community members to help these two organizations,” said Michelle Bauer, who is co-chairing the event with Kim Beiser. “Laughter can help get your mind off your troubles whatever they are. Laughter is very healing and therapeutic, which makes this such a great event.”
The March 8 event is part of Second City’s The Laughing Matters Tour and features different skits than the 2012 show, Bauer said. “With Christmas just a couple of weeks away, this would make a great present – you could go with a loved one and just sit back and laugh – all while helping a good cause,” she said.
Founded in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy worlds best and brightest. The troupe’s alumni includes the following top names in comedy: Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Peter Boyle, Harold Ramis, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, George Wendt, Martin Short, John Candy, Bonnie Hunt, Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Horatio Sanz, Ryan Stiles and countless others.
To date, the Appleton Medical Center and Community Hospice Foundations have signed up WIXX and WLUK Fox 11 as media partners and JP Graphics of Appleton as a print sponsor for the event. Other event sponsors include Jay and Susan Bush, High-Bardon Wealth Management LLC, and SVA Certified Public Accountants.
