Popular ThedaCare Waupaca Class Teaches Important Babysitting Skills
Waupaca-area teenagers have two options offered by ThedaCare this summer to take babysitting classes that will equip them with skills to be successful and responsible babysitters.
Safe Sitters, a class co-sponsored by Riverside Medical Center's Auxiliary, teaches important babysitting skills like injury prevention and treatment, key elements of basic CPR, choking rescue, staying safe, the business of babysitting and being a “body guard” for the child.
Babysitting is a business and sitters need to show parents they have the skills required, said Cynthia Arnoldussen, RN and clinical educator for the Health and Wellness Department at Riverside Medical Center (RMC) in Waupaca. “They need to give parents peace of mind so they feel comfortable leaving their child in the babysitter’s care,” she said.
Babysitters also need to be prepared for issues like behaviors, being safe and the business side of babysitting, said Arnoldussen. “A good babysitter is prepared for whatever may arise,” she said.
The first summer two-part class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mon., June 16 and Tues., June 17. Another two-part class is offered Mon., July 21 and Tues., July 22. The classes meet in the Maasch Education Center located in RMC’s 902 Building. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $25. Teens will be required to attend both classes in June or July to receive certification. For information, call (715) 258-1119 or register on-line at www.thedacare.org.
