Riverside Medical Center Class Explores Healthy Foods for a Healthier You
Goals to eat healthier can become reality, thanks to a class at Riverside Medical Center (RMC). “Everyone thinks about being healthier in the spring. It is time for a new start,” said Carol Peotter, registered dietitian at RMC.
“Food Choices and a Healthy You” will be held on Tues., April 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at RMC’s Maasch Education Center. Peotter will provide practical information on healthy food choices. This interactive session is meant to provide answers to your food or dietary questions. A healthy light luncheon will be provided.
Peotter will cover topics like portioning, healthy fats, healthy grains and fiber. She will also incorporate some of the practices used at the Riverside Café, such as the labeling system of red, yellow and green. Green food items are considered good to go; yellow food items are OK foods; and red food items should make the consumer stop and think about it. And she will also talk about the MyPlate program, which the U.S.Department of Agriculture implemented recently to replace the traditional Food Pyramid.
Peotter hopes the class will “help people to see what are the best things to eat.”
Healthy foods, she noted, do not have to be boring but can be fun and tasty with new ingredients, lower salt content and fats, and fresh ingredients. They can also be incorporated easily into every day meals. “When you start with the healthy ingredients, you can make any recipe healthy,” said Peotter.
The class fee is $5, payable at the door. Each person must register separately. To register, contact Riverside Medical Center Scheduling at 715-258-1119 or visit www.thedacare.org.
