New Diabetes Diet Class Offered In Waupaca

Learn Recommendations for a Personal Food Plan

Those with pre-diabetes and diabetes can learn how to manage their blood sugars at a free class in October in Waupaca.

“Carb Counting, Exchanges, Calories: What's new with the ‘diabetes diet,’" will be offered at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, at Riverside Medical Center.

“We will learn about counting carbohydrates to achieve better blood sugar control and talk about using the plate method of portion control,” said Anne Menzies, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at RMC. “We will do some label reading with grocery store items and discuss how fiber affects blood sugar. In addition, we will learn ways to reduce calories.”

Menzies said the class is important for anyone with pre-diabetes and diabetes “because diet plays such an important role in managing blood sugars. The two important things that people with diabetes can do for themselves to reduce blood sugar is making healthy food choices and exercising,” she said. “That’s free medicine – just the cost of a pair of walking shoes and the knowledge to make smart food choices.”

The class will include a healthy food demo. “We will be making a healthy salad for participants to try,” said Menzies.

Participants must register separately for this free presentation. To register, call (715) 258-1119, or register online at www.thedacare.org.
