Waupaca Diabetes Education Series Kicks Off

Group Meeting in September Focuses on Importance of Lifestyle Changes

Riverside Medical Center (RMC) is ready for a fall line-up of diabetes education group meetings aimed at helping those with diabetes make the right decisions to manage the disease.

“Pre-diabetes and Diabetes: Healthy changes work for both” will be held on Thurs., Sept. 13, and is the first of three meetings offered.

“The class is about how lifestyle changes can make a dramatic impact,” said Marci Reynolds, RN, CDE and supervisor of health and wellness at RMC.

During the program, a certified diabetes educator will give an overview of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and the dramatic effect that changes in lifestyle can make to prevent diabetes from occurring, as well as become a major treatment for diabetes. Those with pre-diabetes can learn how to make changes that “sometimes can turn the numbers around,” said Reynolds.

Diet and exercise are among the key lifestyle changes needed in diabetes management. “What we see here through our programs is that exercise is key,” she said. “Moving your muscle kick starts your metabolism. Not moving your muscles is really a huge component of type 2 diabetes.”

The group meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the Health and Wellness Department in the 900 Building at RMC. Future meeting topics will cover food choices and fitting exercise in.

The diabetes education group meetings are free and refreshments will be served. To register, call (715) 258-1119 or register online at www.thedacare.org.
