Breast Centers Receive Imaging Accreditation

Theda Clark Medical Center, Encircle Health Honored for Programs

November 23, 2011

The Theda Clark Breast Center in Neenah and Encircle Health in Appleton are now designated as Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence, which is achieved by accreditation in all of the American College of Radiology’s voluntary Breast Imaging Programs, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

This recognition requires that facilities meet more rigorous requirements in areas of training, continuing education, practice audits and reporting, as well as ongoing testing and evaluation of the equipment and technology, said Claire Steger, who oversees mammography quality assurance at Theda Clark and Encircle Health. To receive the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation, a center must be fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, and ultrasound guided breast biopsy.

“This program is completely voluntary so the fact we achieved it shows an increased level of commitment to excellence in all aspects of the breast imaging spectrum, not just mammography,” Steger said. “The accreditation not only covers staff training and education, but also that we monitor our equipment and have quality control procedures and quality assurance programs in place. We are dedicated to delivering the best care possible to our patients.”

This designation is the second national accreditation received by the breast centers this year. Earlier, the ThedaCare Breast Centers, which serve patients at Appleton Medical Center, Encircle Health, and Theda Clark, received the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The major certification recognized ThedaCare’s dedication to improving the quality of care and monitoring the outcomes of patients with breast diseases.
