Cancer Services Expand in Shawano

Oncology Offerings Grow from One Day to Two, will Move to Hospital in Fall

Cancer patients in the Shawano area will soon benefit from more access and flexibility in scheduling their local appointments. ThedaCare and Shawano Medical Center announced today that they have further collaborated with Fox Valley Hematology & Oncology, S.C. (FVHO) to expand their oncology services in Shawano. Effective the week of July 9, FVHO will increase its Shawano schedule from one day to two days per week.

“We are pleased to strengthen our partnership with Fox Valley Hematology & Oncology in our community,” said Dorothy Erdmann, president of Shawano Medical Center. “It’s a step that ensures top quality local care for patients and their families, which is at the heart of our work in Shawano. Together we can provide expanded services locally keeping patients close to home.”

As part of the increased investment in oncology and hematology care in Shawano, ThedaCare will install a chemo hood at Shawano Medical Center in preparation for FVHO to move their offices to the hospital in September. A chemo hood is a sealed compartment with specialized ventilation systems designed to safely administer chemotherapy to cancer patients, a necessary equipment upgrade that coincides with the shared commitment to expanded cancer care.

“The increased appointment hours and the new capabilities located on site at the hospital are beneficial to everyone involved,” said Jack Swanson, MD, and president of FVHO. “Both open new doors to a wider range of health care options for our patients and our providers.”

The announcement about expanded cancer care services at Shawano Medical Center follows closely on the heels of ThedaCare’s expansions of pediatrics and dermatology in Shawano. ThedaCare and Shawano Medical Center merged in 2010.
