Community and ThedaCare Collaborate On Function, Design
Plans for the construction of a new medical center in Shawano are on track for a summer 2013 groundbreaking. The new medical center will replace the 81-year-old Shawano Medical Center. It will be built adjacent to ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano at County B and State 22 with the entire complex being called ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. The center will also house ThedaCare At Home-Shawano, ThedaCare At Work-Shawano and the Shawano Surgery Center.
The Boldt Co. of Appleton was recently named general contractor and construction manager. HGA Architects and Engineers of Milwaukee was selected as the architect. The new medical center is expected to open in the fall of 2014.
“The technology part of health care has changed so dramatically in the last 15 years alone. Operating in an 81-year-old facility no longer meets our needs nor the commitment we’ve made to our patients, doctors and staff to provide the highest quality care in our own community,” explained Dorothy Erdmann, CEO/administrator of Shawano Medical Center.
Erdmann noted several significant shortcomings of the old building, including an aging heating and cooling system whose replacement parts are not always immediately available. Key elevators are not wide enough for hospital beds. “This means an expectant mother who needs a C-section has to travel the length of a football field from the Family Birth Center to surgery on a cart, through public hallways and elevators. We can do better than that, and we will,” Erdmann said.
Erdmann said many questions have arisen about how the community will be affected by the new hospital. “We want to assure the community that this new facility will not be paid for by tax dollars. In fact, we expect it to expand opportunities for families in our service area by creating jobs and attracting new business to Shawano,” she added.
Community members are invited to ask questions and share input about the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano by e-mailing Carol Ryczek, SMC community relations manager, at email@example.com or filling out a comment card found at Shawano Medical Center and ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano.
“This is a very exciting time, and we encourage community conversation,” Erdmann said. “We are finalizing the building design and hope to share those plans in the spring. We are also working with city officials to develop a strategy for addressing the old hospital property. A project of this size takes a lot of forethought and mutual cooperation. These discussions are invaluable.”
