Paul Shen, MD, to Practice at Appleton Heart Institute

An experienced cardiothoracic surgeon, Paul Shen, MD, has joined the staff of Appleton Heart Institute within the campus at Appleton Medical Center.

Specializing in adult valvular, aortic valve/root, thoracic aorta and other types of heart surgery, Dr. Shen spent five years working at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation – the top-ranked heart program in the United States. He received his medical degree at Maranatha Christian University of Medicine and completed his internship at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania. Dr. Shen went through two residency programs – the first at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Ohio and the second at West Virginia University School of Medicine. He completed fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Dr. Shen was influenced by medicine as he grew up with his dad, a heart surgeon. His interests outside of work include family activities, swimming, tennis and computers.

In 2011, Appleton Cardiology Associates joined ThedaCare, and is comprised of 17 physicians specializing in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.  Appleton Medical Center is a 160-bed acute care hospital that opened in 1958. In addition to general medical and surgical care, the hospital is the primary location for advanced inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular services including the Appleton Heart Institute, which was the first and most advanced cardiac care program to be established north of Madison and Milwaukee more than 30 years ago.  The new $10 million Appleton Heart Institute, a joint venture with Appleton Cardiology Associates, opened in September 2003.
