Because of that care, local hospitals are able to continue treatment. It’s a relationship that calls for teamwork.

“It’s very much a team effort in taking care of people,” said Dr. Beth Lux, emergency room physician at New London Family Medical Center (NLFMC). “I just love the work that EMS does.”

Kirk Vandenberg, lead flight nurse on ThedaStar, agreed. “What they do truly matters,” he said.

And in many cases, time is of the essence. “Seconds count,” said Dr. Cary Tauchman, an emergency room physician at Riverside Medical Center (RMC). “We need EMS providers to be there, quickly assess a situation and give the best care possible in any situation.”

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) kicks off the 39th annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week on May 20 with events in communities across the nation, as well as several national events organized around the theme "EMS: More Than a Job, A Calling."

National Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line." EMS providers include paramedics, emergency medical technicians, first responders, firefighters and police, some paid, some volunteer.

Local hospitals rely on the care EMS provides. “EMS is always front line,” said Dr. Lux. “They get out there, they get the initial assessment.”

At the scene, EMS stabilizes a patient or provides basic care needs. Emergency departments are in contact with EMS the whole time. Through the communication, they assess needs, call doctors and staff to be ready, all before the patient arrives.

“We rely on that communication to continue the care provided by EMS,” said Dr. Tauchman. “They have life-saving skills, making EMS a critical part of the patient’s care both at the scene and at the hospital.”

At NLFMC, the work of EMS does not stop at the door, said Dr. Lux. Teamwork continues as the hospital staff takes over but EMS is still there, ready to assist, she added.

“When they come in, especially out there because it’s rural, the EMS stays to help,” she said, noting they have provided an extra set of hands in many cases. “They don’t pack up and leave.”

Teamwork is a crucial factor between EMS and ThedaStar when working to provide timely, life-saving intervention, said Vandenberg. “It’s only going to work well if it’s as a team,” he said.

Local hospitals and ThedaStar strive to have good relationships with EMS, said Vandenberg. “It is a team concept for sure and we support the work they do on a daily basis,” he said.

Redman-Schell Named COO for Physician Services

Recently the café revamped its menu options – from main dishes to condiments and snacks – and has implemented a color-code process used at all ThedaCare campuses. Green, yellow and red labels are indicators of go, slow and stop foods. Green food items are considered good to go; yellow food items are foods to eat in moderation; and red food items should make the consumer stop and think about it.

“It’s a really simple method,” said Carol Peotter, registered dietitian at RMC, noting that the system allows patrons “to choose the healthiest foods possible.”

The need came from the company’s desire to have healthier employees. “We looked at how we could make our campus healthier for employees,” said Peotter. “We knew we needed a makeover.”

Recipes in the café have been remade to include healthier fats, lower sodium, more fiber and fresh ingredients like fruits and vegetables. “People who are trying to eat healthier are very appreciative of it,” said Peotter.

She admits it has not been an easy road. “When you change things, people aren’t always the happiest,” she said. Patrons are learning healthy fats are used in fried foods. Favorites like French fries are still available but are cooked in healthier canola oil. While it might be a red item, “you occasionally can have that and we’re making it healthier for you when you do have it.”

The café is also offering more baked items like sweet potato puffs and chicken tenders to reduce the fat and calories. Soups once were pre-made frozen, she said, noting many contained high sodium and fat contents. “Even the typical recipes you would find in a food service recipe book have higher sodium base,” she said. “We took a look at all of our menu items and decided to make up our own fresh soups.”

The changes have been taken in stride and patrons are learning, said Peotter. There have been a couple questions about items that one would expect to be labeled green but are really yellow or red – such as the fruit-flavored yogurt. Plain yogurt is a healthier option than one sweetened with fruit jam, said Peotter. “Sweetened would be a red,” she said.

It has taken some adjustment but people are willing to try. “It’s a learning curve for everybody but the cooks have been wonderful in trying this,” she said.

Peotter said the response to the make-over has been positive. “Physicians have complimented us on how nice and easy it is to choose healthy,” she said.

Now that the café menu is in order, Peotter is looking to the future of the café. Soon she hopes it will offer fresh and local foods like produce. Her dream would be to move the café, to be named River’s Bend Café, from its current location to the first floor, making it easily accessible also to patients, families and the community.

“Not only would we have healthier Riverside employees but we’d have a healthier community,” said Peotter.

Pregnancy Planning Presentation Offered

When a person arrives at the hospital, clear communication is critical in determining the right course of care. Now patients who speak languages other than English, as well as those who are hearing-impaired, can better communicate with their healthcare providers through Martti Express. This real-time online translation service is available at Appleton Medical Center (AMC), with Theda Clark Medical Center soon to follow — the only Fox Cities hospitals to offer the service.

Martti (My Accessible Real Time Trusted Interpreter) gives patients and healthcare providers immediate video access to language interpretation in 210 languages, including American sign language. This HIPPA-compliant wireless monitor with interactive touch screen is portable for use throughout AMC so any patient cared for in any department can benefit from the service.

“Martti helps patients feel understood and allows healthcare providers to care for most patients quickly and confidently,” said Fawn Rogers, the special projects coordinator who brought the system to AMC and trains healthcare providers in its use. “With Martti, we don’t waste patients’ or providers’ time searching for the right interpreter. We can get right to caring for our patients.”

Healthcare providers in AMC’s emergency and obstetrics departments began a pilot of the Martti system in November. They have found the service invaluable.

“ThedaCare knows complying with legal mandates is not enough,” said Andrew Panos, COO of Language Access Network, the maker of the Martti system. “Too often, communication errors occur within the first moments of a patient’s arrival when interpreters are seldom available, increasing costs and testing while decreasing patient satisfaction. LAN offers a proven mechanism in combating these barriers to care.”

Six “Well Workplaces” Recognized in Community-Wide Wellness Initiative

Six employers honored with Well Workplace Awards on Thurs., April 12, at Lawrence University have put the Fox Cities region well on its way to being named a Well City by the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA). ThedaCare, Affinity Health System and Network Health are platinum sponsors of the initiative, which aims by May 31, 2013, to have at least 20 percent of Fox Cities’ employees — some 32,000 people — working for businesses that have received the Well Workplace designation.

Businesses netting Well Workplace Awards include Affinity Health System, Appleton, Aurora Health Care, J.J. Keller, Kimberly-Clark Corp., and Network Health. These firms, which together employ well over 10,000 people, each have met WELCOA’s seven benchmarks of results-oriented workplace wellness programs: capturing CEO support, creating cohesive wellness teams, collecting data to drive health efforts, carefully crafting an operating plan, choosing appropriate interventions, creating a supportive environment, and carefully evaluating outcomes.

Thus far, more than 50 employers representing some 34,000 employees in 17 communities have registered as Well City Fox Cities participants.

“Improving the health of our communities is at the heart of ThedaCare’s mission, which is why we’re fully behind Well City Fox Cities,” says ThedaCare senior vice president Bill Mann. “When employers make a meaningful effort to help employees to live healthier, happier lives, our community becomes a better place for all of us.”

Deb Anderson, director of Health Promotion at Network Health, agrees: “Making healthy lifestyle changes has a profound effect on an individual. This in turn has a ripple effect on that person’s family, friends and community. If we can motivate employees one by one to live healthier lives, we can change the culture of the Fox Cities.”

“Well Cities Fox Cities is a fantastic example of our community coming together to make this an even better place to live and work,” said Lisa Kogan-Praska, director of Occupational Health & Customer Experience with Affinity Medical Group. “We have seen employers really embrace the wellness culture and we are starting to see the impact right here in our communities.”

Regional employers can help the Fox Cities become a Well City by joining the movement. To do so, employers must send a CEO letter of commitment, available at www.wellcityfoxcities.com, to WELCOA. Participating businesses also must join WELCOA at a cost of $495. Membership offers access to wellness training, resources and communication tools that employers can use to develop workplace wellness programs, plus guidance from experts at the Wisconsin Council on Wellness.

“It’s been exciting to see so many employers in so many different industries take a serious interest in the health of their employees,” says Larry Sobal, CEO spokesperson for Well City Fox Cities. “More and more businesses are joining this effort each month, which means more and more people are getting healthier.”

Well City USA is a concept created in 1991 by WELCOA. This national nonprofit organization is a leading resource for health and wellness promotion.

The event will take place on Sat., May 5, at the Old Riverside Elementary School in Waupaca. Two separate races will be held – a 1-mile walk/run that starts at 9:30 a.m. and a 5K event beginning at 10 a.m.

Event planners expect about 350 people to attend the race. New for this year is chip timing for the participants.

The race route also has changed from last year, due to construction on Main Street. “The race starts at Riverside School and meanders through the surrounding residential area,” said Lyann Holicek, with RMC. “The usual route would have taken the runners through South Park, but because of the construction on Main Street, the route had to be changed.”

The event continues to offer a costume contest. “We have seen some clever, creative costumes over the years,” said Jenson. “It adds a fun element to the family-friendly event.”

Jenson praised the volunteers who continue to support the event. “We have a dedicated group of volunteers who make the race possible,” he said.

Holicek has volunteered for 25 of the 26 years. “Volunteering on race day is fun for everyone,” she said. The volunteers enjoy fellowship with each other. “We have coffee and donuts for them,” said Holicek. “The Auxiliary corner people gather and enjoy the refreshments while visiting with one another before they leave for their assigned corners. Some haven't seen one another since the prior race.”

Things really get moving when the participants arrive, she said. “The start of the race is always exciting and watching the leaders cross the finish line at the end of the race is a great experience,” she said. “It is pure enjoyment being a volunteer for the Riverside Annual Fun Run with much satisfaction derived by the end of the day.”

A blanket can provide the simple pleasures of warmth and comfort.

Recently, the Riverside Health Foundation in Waupaca purchased a blanket warmer to provide warm blankets for oncology patients in the Oncology Treatment area at Riverside Medical Center (RMC).

A warm blanket can mean a great deal to patients, said Donna Trinrud, scheduling and multi-specialty clinic manager at Riverside Medical Center. Some patients are in the office for several hours while receiving treatments, she said. And there are others who are naturally cold or become so while receiving infusions.

Trinrud said a member of the foundation saw the need for a blanket warmer while visiting with a friend who was receiving a treatment session. The member set about to ordering the $5,000 blanket warmer, which was received in February.

Trinrud said the blanket warmer is a welcome addition to the clinic and its oncology patients. The blanket warmer is not visible in the chemotherapy suite but a posted sign advertises their availability. “Patients are happy that they’ve got this opportunity, something that’s going to make them feel better for the time they are here,” she said.

Foundation President Steve Huhta agreed. “The Foundation is pleased to serve Riverside’s oncology patients by helping make their visits a little more comfortable as the result of being wrapped in a warm blanket,” he said.

Trinrud said the foundation’s gift was generous and thoughtful. “Budgets are tight and you can’t always get 'luxuries',” she said “It’s very, very considerate.”

Midwife Delivering at Appleton Medical Center

April 12, 2012

Becky Kahler-Thyssen of Women’s Care Expands her Service Offerings

Expectant mothers delivering at Appleton Medical Center now have the option of using a midwife.

Becky Kahler-Thyssen, a nurse practitioner and midwife who has been with Women’s Care of Wisconsin since 2009, is now delivering babies at Appleton Medical Center.

Midwives are experts in pregnancy and health education – a combination that perfectly matches the needs of many women, Kahler-Thyssen said.

“Many women choose to use a midwife during childbirth so they can experience a process that is as natural as possible,” she said. “I’m usually at the patient’s bedside during labor providing guidance, nurturing, and encouragement. It is very comforting for a woman to have someone they have come to know and trust at their bedside when they are feeling very vulnerable.”

Studies show that women who choose to use a midwife often have shorter labors and a lower occurrence of interventions, such as a cesarean, Kahler-Thyssen said. She said most women can use a midwife unless there are complications in the pregnancy, such as severe pre-eclampsia.

“Our obstetricians who specialize in high-risk pregnancies would be a better choice if there are complications with the pregnancy. We have a real team approach at Women’s Care. We all work together to provide the best care possible for our patients,” she said.

Kahler-Thyssen received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Bellin College of Nursing and her master’s degree in nursing with a specialty in midwifery from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Hyden, Kentucky. Certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives, she completed her clinical preparation at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Clinic in La Crosse.

Kahler-Thyssen’s care for women goes beyond pregnancy and childbirth. She sees patients ranging in age from their teens to their 70s and conducts annual exams and works with women on any concerns they have concerning their gynecological health.

“Being a woman myself, I think it’s important to provide women with as much information as possible and then let them make the decision that’s right for them,” Thyssen said.

Mary Downs is the new system vice president for ThedaCare’s Spine and Orthopedic business lines.

Downs spent the past three years as executive director of ThedaCare Behavioral Health. During that time, Downs helped double the number of psychiatric providers, led the expansion of the inpatient behavioral health unit at Theda Clark Medical Center, and was integral in bringing together ThedaCare, Affinity and Children’s Hospital in the creation of Catalpa Health pediatric behavioral health.

In her new role, Downs will provide strategic and customer-focused leadership of the spine and orthopedic business lines. She will also oversee operations of ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus.

Before joining ThedaCare, Downs worked at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for 22 years in a variety of roles.
Remembering Through Sharing Plans Family Celebration on May 6

When parents lose a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn birth, they may feel alone and lost at how to remember their child. A May 6 event will provide families with an opportunity to celebrate their child’s memory.

ThedaCare’s Remembering Through Sharing Pregnancy Loss Program is sponsoring a special spring event from 1- 2:30 p.m. at The Gardens of the Fox Cities inside Appleton’s Memorial Park. Families will build and decorate a kite in their child’s honor and participate in other activities with families facing the same challenges.

Joan Heller, the Remembering Through Sharing coordinator, said the event grew from the group’s popular annual Walk to Remember and Annual Candlelight Memorial Service. “The families find comfort getting together with others who have experienced the death of a baby. It’s a time to connect with new families and catch up with the people who have supported them through their journey,” she said.

Families are invited to bring mementos, such picture items, baby books or other items celebrating their child’s life, to display in memory of their child.

“This event is designed to be an uplifting time to come together and remember these precious children,” Heller said. “With the great spring weather we’ve been having, The Gardens will be a wonderful background to celebrate these babies’ lives.”

Families interested in attending can contact Heller at (920) 729-2087.

Maryjeanne Schaffmeyer Named to New COO Post

April 10, 2012

ThedaCare Physicians to Provide Screenings to Help Kids Eat Better, Exercise More

Healthy eating and fitness will be in the spotlight on April 22 at the Healthy Lifestyle Free Day at The Building for Kids Children’s Museum in downtown Appleton.

Admission to the museum will be free from noon to 5 p.m. In addition to letting children and their families explore the museum, including the new Eat Well, Play Well special exhibit, providers from ThedaCare Physicians will provide free healthy lifestyle screenings for children.

“Each child participating in the special screening day will have a personal assessment and recommendations for how to improve their health,” said John A. Edwards, MD, a pediatrician with ThedaCare Physicians-Pediatrics. “Unhealthy eating and lifestyle choices can affect our kids every day. Some struggle with obesity, the No. 1 health challenge facing our children today. Helping all kids make healthier choices will improve the health of our communities.”

In addition to ThedaCare, the day’s other two sponsors are Faith Technologies and the United Way.

Eat Well, Play Well, a special exhibit running April 7 to Sept. 9 at The Building for Kids Children’s Museum, encourages healthy living by teaching the science of making healthy food choices and helping children and adults discover there are many fun and interesting ways to stay active. Visitors will discover through interactive exhibits what an appropriate serving size looks like, see firsthand what it takes to burn off calories, test their flexibility and balance, review the latest clinical research and realize they can reduce their risk of disease with healthy choices.

Eat Well, Play Well is entertaining and educational, said Dana Thorpe, executive director of The Building for Kids Children’s Museum.

“Teaching our children good habits about staying active and making the right food choices is essential to their future health. We hope children and their families have fun and walk away with some important information about how they can make changes to live a healthier life,” she said. “They’ll also learn that making some simple changes can make a big difference.”

Eat Well, Play Well was produced and is toured by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. This exhibit was made possible by a Science Education Partnership Award grant from the National Center for Research Resources, a component of the National Institutes of Health. Locally, ThedaCare is the exhibit’s presenting sponsor. Other local sponsors include The Post-Crescent, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Fox Valley, Octoberfest, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, Scheels Sports and Faith Technologies, Inc.

The not-for-profit Building for Kids Children’s Museum, 100 W. College Ave., opened in downtown Appleton in 1992.
Event Featuring Second City to Fund Cancer, Hospice Services

Laughter was the right prescription for a recent fundraiser for the Appleton Medical Center and Community Hospice Foundations, which raised $49,000 to help patients and their families receiving cancer and hospice care through services provided by ThedaCare.

The foundations teamed up to plan the March 2 “Laughter is the Best Medicine,” featuring The Second City at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.

More than 1,100 people attended the event, which surpassed the initial expectation of 900, said Kim Beiser, foundation board member and event chair. “The community support was outstanding. It was not only a fun event to attend and appealed to a variety of ages, but we also raised important funds to support cancer and hospice services,” she said.

The funds raised were equally divided between supporting cancer services at Appleton Medical Center (AMC) and the Community Hospice Foundation, which is funding improvements at Cherry Meadows Hospice and additional projects.

A well-known comedy troupe, Chicago’s The Second City brought in more attendees than the foundations’ usual fundraisers, Beiser said.

“Laughter appeals to everyone and The Second City was a great draw. Who couldn’t use a little more laughter in their life?” she said. “It was a great event for a great cause and to top it off, we were able to raise awareness of the two foundations.”

“Laughter is the Best Medicine” also drew significant supports from sponsors, which is essential for events, said Amanda Williams, development coordinator-stewardship and special events for the Appleton Medical Center Foundation and the Community Hospice Foundation. Lead sponsors for the event included The Boldt Company, Jay & Susan Bush, Community First Credit Union, Epic, Fox Valley Hematology & Oncology, S.C., Appleton Medical Center, Theda Clark Medical Center, and ThedaCare At Home.

“Choosing comedy as entertainment was a great choice – there was no generational gap. People came and had fun whether they were 15 or 75,” she said.

ThedaCare At Home provides a continuum of home care services for adults and children, including skilled nursing, home and residential hospice care, respiratory services, infusion therapy, home medical equipment, rehabilitation and mobility services, remote monitoring and other specialty services serving individuals in 12 counties. In addition, ThedaCare At Home manages the Hospice at Cherry Meadows, a residential hospice located at The Heritage and Peabody Manor Community in Appleton. The hospice program is financially supported by the Community Hospice Foundation.

I am pregnant and have been hearing about the importance of the Tdap vaccine. Why is it so important for family members to get it?

Tdap is the vaccination to help prevent infection with pertussis, the bacteria responsible for causing whooping cough. Unfortunately pertussis is still common and tends to spread because it is contagious and hard to differentiate from a cold. It can affect anyone causing persistent uncontrollable coughing spells, but doctors worry most about it in young infants. The younger an infant is, the more likely he or she is to have severe symptoms from whooping cough. And, the child can even die from it. Even though it is a bacteria, antibiotics often do not help the symptoms of the illness much.

Pertussis is one of the illnesses vaccinated as part of the routine immunizations that every infant should get. However because the vaccinations can't be given until 2 months old, newborns are not protected against pertussis for those first two months. Recent studies have shown that giving the vaccine to pregnant mothers can provide immunity to newborns even before they get their first dose of pertussis vaccine at 2 months old. Receiving the Tdap vaccine during pregnancy, as well as vaccinating family members, achieves a protective “cocoon” for a newborn so that hopefully no one can infect the child with pertussis before he or she is vaccinated.

Free Event Highlights Bike Safety and Importance of Helmets

The warm weather is here, which means kids will be out and about, potentially on their bikes or skates.

But don’t let them forget their safety helmets and rules for the road.

According to national statistics, more than 1.8 billion bicycle outings occur each year, resulting in nearly 580,000 visits to emergency departments. Injuries sustained range from common abrasions, cuts and bruises to broken bones, internal injuries, head trauma and even death.

Kids can learn bicycle safety tips through a fun and interactive clinic being offered Sat., May 12, from 9-11 a.m. at New London Middle School.

This event is sponsored by The Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation, New London Family Medical Center, and ThedaCare Physicians-New London. The foundation is working in collaboration with the New London High School Decca Club and the New London Police Department. Additional funding has been provided from the United Way New London.

Deborah Johnson, WRAHF president, said the event highlights awareness of bike safety and the importance of wearing helmets. “As the healthcare provider in the community, our hope is to help kids stay safe,” she said. “We look forward to this event and providing kids with the tips they need to stay safe when biking or skating. Accidents can easily happen and kids need to be aware and equipped to prevent serious, even life threatening, injuries.”

Children, ages 5-12, can bring their bike or skates and bike helmet to participate in training stations where they learn about, and practice, safe bicycling skills such as starting and stopping, the safe way to exit a driveway, and how to look for traffic, negotiate an intersection and avoid common road hazards.

The clinic also includes a safety inspection of bicycles. Participants will also receive a free, fitted Bell helmet. For more information, contact Kelly Beyer at 920-531-2066.

Riverside Medical Center Class Explores Healthy Foods for a Healthier You

Goals to eat healthier can become reality, thanks to a class at Riverside Medical Center (RMC). “Everyone thinks about being healthier in the spring. It is time for a new start,” said Carol Peotter, registered dietitian at RMC.

“Food Choices and a Healthy You” will be held on Tues., April 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at RMC’s Maasch Education Center. Peotter will provide practical information on healthy food choices. This interactive session is meant to provide answers to your food or dietary questions. A healthy light luncheon will be provided.

Peotter will cover topics like portioning, healthy fats, healthy grains and fiber. She will also incorporate some of the practices used at the Riverside Café, such as the labeling system of red, yellow and green. Green food items are considered good to go; yellow food items are OK foods; and red food items should make the consumer stop and think about it. And she will also talk about the MyPlate program, which the U.S.Department of Agriculture implemented recently to replace the traditional Food Pyramid.

Peotter hopes the class will “help people to see what are the best things to eat.”

Healthy foods, she noted, do not have to be boring but can be fun and tasty with new ingredients, lower salt content and fats, and fresh ingredients. They can also be incorporated easily into every day meals. “When you start with the healthy ingredients, you can make any recipe healthy,” said Peotter.

The class fee is $5, payable at the door. Each person must register separately. To register, contact Riverside Medical Center Scheduling at 715-258-1119 or visit www.thedacare.org.

April 3, 2012

Healthcare Decisions Day Highlights need to Document, Communicate Wishes

Making medical decisions isn’t always easy – especially when those choices need to be made at an emotional time. Now imagine not being able to make that decision due to a medical condition – your loved ones will need to act on your behalf. This is a scenario many families unfortunately face, but there is something that you can do about it.

April 16 is National Healthcare Decisions Day. This day is a collaborative effort of national, state and community healthcare organizations committed to ensuring that all adults with decision-making capacity in the United States have the information and opportunity to communicate and document their wishes regarding their healthcare decisions.

To support this initiative, documents will be available at all ThedaCare sites to provide information and tools for employees and the public to create written advance directives. These directives are in accordance with Wisconsin state laws and used to encourage the discussion about your wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers. The directive will allow people to clearly communicate their healthcare wishes and name the person who would make medical decisions on their behalf if they are not able to tell health care providers what they want. This service is provided free of charge by ThedaCare.

“Please carefully consider participating in National Healthcare Decisions Day if you do not already have a written healthcare directive in place,” said Dean Gruner, MD, president and CEO of ThedaCare. “In my years as a family practice physician, I personally saw the stress many families went through because a loved one had not prepared a healthcare directive. Because of that, I encourage everyone to complete an advance directive.”

“I encourage everyone to complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known to help spare your families with making difficult healthcare decisions without your guidance,” Dr. Gruner added. “If we all complete this important document, healthcare facilities and providers will be better equipped to address advance healthcare planning issues before a crisis arrives and we can better honor the wishes of all patients.”

“By remaining CARF accredited, we demonstrate our commitment to continuously improve our service quality, encourage feedback, and serve our community,” she said.

Competitive 5-Mile and 2-Mile Walk/Run on April 28

Organizers for the 2nd Annual Sturgeon Shuffle are anticipating walkers and runners from all over to participate in an event that benefits local health care programs.

“It's amazing what we can accomplish as a region while working together to promote wellness,” said Laurie Shaw, executive director, New London Area Chamber of Commerce, who is co-chairing the event with Dr. Jim Ziegler at Wolf River Veterinarian Clinic. “This event excites me because so many people at different ages and fitness levels have chosen to participate.”

The 5-mile and 2-mile road run or walk is on Sat., April 28. It starts at New London Middle School and takes participants along the New London’s Wolf River Sturgeon Trail.

Last year, participants were treated to the site of the giant sturgeon rollicking in the water on the way to the Wolf River.

“This year the sturgeon beat us to the start line,” said Deborah Johnson, executive director, Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation. “This year’s unseasonably warm weather has given way to an early running of the sturgeon.”

But Johnson still anticipates a positive event, which benefits the Foundation’s outreach programs in the communities it serves. “This is an exciting event in a great setting for a great cause,” said Johnson. “Participants can enjoy a healthy morning walk with friends and neighbors while raising money for future health and wellness programs in their community.”

“New London is proud to host this popular wellness event for the second year,” said Shaw. “The Sturgeon Shuffle offers participants the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful Wolf River Sturgeon Trail while helping the foundation to raise funds which will be reinvested into area wellness programs.”

This year, the Honorary Event Chairs will be 20 young ladies from Clintonville Middle School’s You Grow Girl program, a self esteem and wellness program designed to empower adolescent girls.
This year’s event is being promoted locally, regionally and nationally with the anticipation of over 300 participants.

“We look forward to welcoming all the participants and the many community friends and neighbors who have supported this event,” said Shaw.

The Rural Health Initiative is holding its 1st Annual Wine & Cheese Tasting for Waupaca County from 7-10 p.m. on Fri., April 27, at the Crystal Falls Banquet Hall in New London. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample 40 kinds of wine and 40 different types of cheeses while listening to entertainment provided by Uptown.

Money raised at the event will go to the Rural Health Initiative, which brings basic health education and screening to the farm. The Rural Health Initiative expanded earlier this year in Outagamie and Waupaca counties after several successful years in Shawano County. In Shawano County, the program serves about 40 percent of the county’s total farm families.

Registered nurse Shirley Yaeger visits Waupaca County farm families in their homes and offers basic health information and screenings. The visits last about 45 minutes and participants get their lab results that same day.

“Everyone has been very receptive to the program and word is starting to spread. It’s a great opportunity for farmers to get health information at their own homes and not worry about having to go into town,” she said. “We can do health coaching at the same time and provide very individualized information.”

Tickets for the Wine & Cheese Tasting are $25 each. They can be purchased in advance by contacting Rhonda Strebel at (715) 524-1488 or John Lockwood at (715) 256-2500.

Event sponsors include ThedaCare Physicians, Larson Cooperative, First State Bank, Waupaca Area Dairy Promotions, Waupaca Farm Bureau, Premier Community Bank and Jay-Mar.

Facilities that Help Diagnose Neurological Disorders Receive National Honor

Appleton Medical Center (AMC) and Theda Clark Medical Center labs that help diagnose neurological disorders recently earned national accreditation.

The American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) gave a five-year accreditation to the hospitals’ electroencephalography (EEG) laboratories. ABRET evaluates technical standards, the quality of the laboratory’s output and lab management issues.

Neurodiagnostics Medical Director Ryan Zantow, MD, said the accreditation means the EEG lab meets strict standards and is recognized as a place where patients and physicians feel confident receiving quality diagnostics for epilepsy, focal brain disturbances, space-occupying lesions, and vascular disorders.

“This accreditation is one of many steps in our commitment to excellence,” he said. “We will continue to work hard to ensure delivery of world-class neurodiagnostic services to our communities.”

Dr. Zantow said the accreditation means tests performed at AMC and Theda Clark have enhanced credibility when data is sent to outside institutions or used in court. The ABRET certification also lets patients and providers know the lab meets established standards and has a reputation for integrity.

AMC is a 160-bed acute care hospital that opened in 1958. In addition to general medical and surgical care, services include the Appleton Heart Institute, a fully staffed emergency department, pediatrics, birthing services, a comprehensive cancer center, and ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus, which integrates orthopedics, sports medicine, outpatient rehabilitation and other services. Appleton Medical Center is an accredited Chest Pain Center by the national Society of Chest Pain Centers.

Theda Clark Medical Center is a 166-bed acute care hospital founded in 1909. In addition to general medical and surgical care, specialized services include a birth center, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin - Fox Valley, the region’s only American College of Surgeons Verified Level II Trauma Center, the Aylward Outpatient Surgery Center and ThedaStar Air Medical Helicopter. Theda Clark Medical Center also offers comprehensive neuroscience care and the Theda Clark Stroke Center was the first stroke center in Northeast Wisconsin to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. The Bariatric Program at Theda Clark, along with Midwest Bariatric Solutions and its surgeons, have jointly received two Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designations by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

It’s not if it will happen, it’s when it will happen.” As we approach the Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin, I have to ask are you ready?

I recently spoke with a staff member from Joplin Mercy St. John’s hospital and he is still in unbelief. He stated that he was one of those people that when the siren went off he went outside to look. Never again will he doubt the sirens or severe weather alerts when they sound, he will seek shelter immediately, it happens so fast.

Sirens are serious!! Sirens are no longer just for tornados. Many counties will sound the sirens during a severe thunderstorm with predicted damaging winds.

Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. Spawned from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in seconds.

Definitions:

Tornado Watch - Tornadoes are possible. Remain alert for approaching storms. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or television for information.

Tornado Warning - A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately. (Sirens activated)

Severe Thunderstorm Watch - Tells you when and where severe thunderstorms are likely to occur. Watch the sky and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or television for information.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Issued when severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property to those in the path of the storm. (Sirens maybe activated)

What should you do to prepare for the upcoming severe weather season? Have a plan!

At home:

Have a family communication plan in place and practice it.

Take shelter immediately in the lowest place possible when the sirens sound.

Make sure you have a working radio and flashlight in your basement or nearby.

At work:

Know your department’s emergency plan.

Know where the emergency equipment is located in your department.

Luann Killoren, a clinical lab assistant at New London Family Medical Center, isn’t the type to seek the spotlight. Her colleagues describe her as humble, not looking for recognition — Luann would simply call it serving her patients.

About 18 months ago, a lab patient put in a request for home service and, in keeping with ThedaCare’s patient-centered approach, the lab broadened its services to respond. Luann immediately volunteered for the assignment.

She now does home visits once a week, more if the need arises. Since she’s a half-time employee, Luann often takes time out of her personal schedule to do these at-home lab draws if the patient’s required bloodwork falls on her day off.

While the distance Luann travels is not far — usually no more than a couple miles — her dedication to providing the best patient experience is invaluable. Non-ambulatory patients are grateful that they don’t need to travel outside for their bloodwork, especially in poor weather.

Luann’s visits also give homebound patients the social interaction they miss. She has formed a deep and lasting friendship with one of her regular patients.

“Luann walks the walk and is a great example of how going that little extra mile can make a huge difference,” said her co-worker Diane Pelky.

Tired of Dealing with Chronic Pain?

Bergstrom Automotive Gives Theda Clark Medical Center a New Chevy Traverse

Patients in Theda Clark Medical Center’s inpatient rehabilitation unit have a new way to prepare for leaving the hospital thanks to the Bergstrom Corp.

The Bergstrom Corp. recently donated a Chevy Traverse to the unit so the physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapists can help patients – who are frequently recovering from a stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury – get out into the community, practice getting in and out of a vehicle, or go home for a safety check.

“Getting out into the ‘real world’ is an important part of recovery,” said Sara Kloes, business unit manager of Theda Clark’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. “The patient may be doing well in the hospital setting where everything is accessible, but need education and practice outside, where there are uneven surfaces, ramps, curbs and other obstacles. By taking our therapy outside of the hospital’s four walls, we are able to better help patients transition to going back home.”

The unit’s former vehicle was getting worn out and John Bergstrom, chairman of the Bergstrom Corp. in Neenah and a member of the Theda Clark Medical Center Foundation, stepped forward to provide a new vehicle. Bergstrom Corp. is Wisconsin’s top automotive dealer, with 25 dealerships around Wisconsin.

“When I heard about the program and its needs, I wanted to step up and provide them with a vehicle to help improve the care and services provided to patients,” Bergstrom said. “The Chevy Traverse was the ideal vehicle since it has plenty of room for what’s needed because they often need to bring along wheelchairs. I am happy the Bergstrom Corp. was able to help out with this donation.”

Therapists drive patients in the rehab unit over to the Neenah-Menasha YMCA for aquatic therapy, or to a local store, a park or even their home as a part of the recovery process, Kloes said. She added that Bergstrom met with therapists and talked to them about their needs.

“The therapists go with the patients to their homes and can do a safety check and look for possible challenges and what kind of equipment, such as grab bars, might be necessary,” Kloes said. “All of our patients have different needs and are at different points in the recovery process. This new vehicle will better help us address everyone’s unique needs.”

Theda Clark Medical Center’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit recently received a three year accreditation for its medical rehabilitation and stroke specialty programs. The accreditation was given by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services providers. The unit has remained CARF accredited since 1982.

Theda Clark Medical Center is a 166-bed acute care hospital founded in 1909.
Enjoy a Sampling of Exercises to Promote Healthy Lifestyle

Exercise plays an important role in the overall health of an individual. A program at the Waupaca Recreation Center seeks to introduce a variety of exercises most anyone can do.

“Diabetes and Exercise: Let’s Move!” will be at 6:30 p.m., Thurs., April 19, in the exercise room at the Waupaca Recreation Center, 407 School St. Although the program is for diabetes support and education, anyone can attend and benefit.

“Exercise is a key component of a healthy lifestyle to help prevent and control diabetes,” said Beckie Crisman, certified diabetes educator at Riverside Medical Center (RMC). “It also promotes heart health and weight loss and overall well being.”

During this free program, participants will sample exercises like Tai Chi, Zumba, general toning exercises, Yoga, and aerobic exercise. “This program will give you ideas to how to choose a routine that that fits your lifestyle and ability,” said Crisman.

The exercises can be done at home or through group programs. “We will explore the many community options for exercise from the rec center to local fitness centers and even at RMC,” said Crisman.

After spending a year in Haiti, Dr. Terry Dietrich learned some valuable skills he can apply with his New London patients.

Complex foot and ankle conditions are among some of the issues he addresses with patients here. “Instead of having to send them out, many of those cases I can take care of here,” said Dr. Dietrich, an orthopedic surgeon with ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus.

Dr. Dietrich went to Haiti in 2010 to lead a team of volunteer medical staff at Hospitale Adentiste d’Haiti (HAH). He worked toward making it a financially stable facility so it can continue providing excellent orthopedic care to millions of Haitians who live in poverty. He also helped develop teaching programs to train Haitians to take over the work of overseas volunteers.

Orthopedic surgeon Scott Nelson, MD, with support from Loma Linda University, developed the orthopedic service at HAH. Two days after the Jan. 12 earthquake, he went to Haiti and soon identified HAH as the best site to start treating earthquake victims. Millions of dollars of orthopedic tools and implants donated after the disaster found their way to HAH, and doctors are now able to routinely perform sophisticated orthopedic procedures. The hospital has become the country’s main orthopedic referral center, which Dr. Nelson asked Dr. Dietrich to head.

Dr. Dietrich said much of the work they did was on earthquake victims with fractures, dislocations and infections. However, he said, the bigger part of the work turned to those with preexisting conditions, like severe deformities requiring major implants.

“The poor in Haiti, over 8 million people, had never had a hospital they could go to for orthopedic deformities,” he said, adding that HAH “agreed to give free care to the indigent.”

Dr. Dietrich worked with many teams of specialists. “We were very fortunate to work with all of these teams,” he said. “Many of them are very, very highly skilled people.”

“I personally was able to learn a lot from these teams that came down,” added Dr. Dietrich, noting he was able to assist with complex procedures.

Dr. Dietrich returned to Wisconsin in November 2011 and joined ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus’ New London office. He treats the entire range of orthopedic conditions in children to adults with special interest in joint and Oxford partial knee replacement, foot and ankle problems, and all types of deformities.

Dr. Dietrich enjoys being in a small town. “I like the people here,” he said. “This is a situation that suits my personality well.”

Dr. Dietrich still has a passion for those in Haiti and its people. “We found that in spite of the fact that they have very little in terms of material possessions, they have a lot in terms of relationships,” he said. “They are pretty happy people despite that they are very poor.”

Dr. Dietrich said he was extremely satisfied to help the Haitian people. “We found a tremendous amount of satisfaction in the work we did for the poor there,” he said.

Dr Dietrich knows the facility still needs support from teams in terms of manpower and donations. He is trying to raise funds with the sale of a coffee table book called Haiti Together We Move. The book has many pictures donated by professional photographers. It tells a compelling story of the tragedy of the earthquake and the humanitarian response.

“The people themselves are very, very good people, and the country has a lot of beauty and we really enjoyed the time that we were there,” said Dr. Dietrich.

Dr. Dietrich received his undergraduate degree at Union College in Lincoln, Neb., and earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University in California. He is certified through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In 2002, the Neufeld Society named him Orthopedic Surgeon of the Year.

He has 35 years of practice experience, and originally joined ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus in 2006.

In addition to his active role as a surgeon, Dr. Dietrich is also a professor of orthopedic surgery who teaches medical and pre-med students as well as residents. His fluent languages include English and Spanish.

Mother, Daughter Class Addresses Puberty Topics

March 9, 2012

Riverside Medical Center (RMC) is offering a mother-daughter class on puberty in April that will help them address the sensitive topics of physical and emotional development.

The class, “Especially for Girls: What’s Happening to Me?,” is taught in a fun and relaxing environment. It is not a sex education class.

The class also gives mothers and daughters an opportunity to bond together as they address sensitive topics facing young women.

“We feel it’s very important to get the lines of communication open between the mothers and daughters and we often see this very process develop during some of our class activities,” said Cyndy Irvine, Health and Wellness Nurse.

“Especially for Girls: What’s Happening to Me?” is on Saturday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at RMC’s Maasch Education Center.

Spring & Summer Travel Tips

It’s that time of year again — families are heading off to explore new places, from the Dells, to Daytona, to Dubai. Our spring ThedaCare magazine shared some of our doctors’ favorite tips for healthy travel. Here are a few more ideas to help you stay safe, healthy and prepared in the states and abroad.

Travel Essentials

Organize a travel medicine kit with non-prescription medications and first-aid items, including:

Pepto-Bismol®/diarrhea

Benadryl®/antihistamine

Motion sickness medicine for flying or ship

Laxative

Antacid

Hydrocortisone cream for bug bites

Ibuprofen

Aspirin to chew to counteract chest pain

Band-Aids®

Aloe vera for sunburn

Thermometer

Ace wrap

Gauze

Cotton swabs

Specific Travel Concerns

Flying

Relieve altitude pressure with a nasal decongestant or nasal spray.

Move around every 30-60 minutes to reduce the risk of blood clots (also applies to long road trips).

Manage jet lag by taking 2-4 mg of melatonin before bed on the day of travel and for four days after you arrive.

Hiking or Camping

Use an insect repellant with Deet to avoid bug bites and ticks.

Boil or filter any water from streams.

Going International

Know your vaccinations and be up to date. Your doctor, the ThedaCare at Work Travel Medicine Clinic, or websites like www.cdc.gov or www.travel.state.gov are great resources.

Visit a travel clinic 4-6 weeks before leaving. Many vaccines are given in a series, and some need a special stamp from the state.

Consider purchasing travel insurance or evacuation insurance. U.S. insurance plans often won’t cover health issues abroad.

Opt for bottled water or boil it before drinking, and remember, ice cubes are water too. Also peel any fruit washed in local water.

ThedaCare’s interpreters can assist in translating medication lists or health information.

Traveling with Kids

Traveling while pregnant is usually quite safe — just see your doctor before leaving if you know your pregnancy has complications.

For infants, pre-fill a few bottles with water. They’ll come in handy to mix formula if you’re stuck in an airport or elsewhere without a nearby water source.

For older kids, keep healthy snacks on hand for long waits or car rides.

Medications

Double check your medications before heading out.

Consider getting prescriptions from a national chain store so you can obtain them more quickly in an emergency.

Wear a medical alert bracelet at all times if you have anaphylactic allergies, and have an EpiPen® in your carry-on bag.

Be aware of temperature limitations of medications — extreme heat or cold can reduce effectiveness.

Pack a list of all your prescriptions, including the brand name and generic names (Safe travel hint: Leave a copy of this list with friends or family at home, in case your luggage is lost or stolen). Also include a doctor’s letter for any injectibles or controlled substances you must take.
