Heart and Vascular Emergency Care

Fast Care, When it Matters Most
When you or a loved one is having a medical emergency, every moment matters. ThedaCare’s "Code STEMI" emergency process ensures that a diagnosis and treatment is made in 90 minutes or less.

About Code STEMI
Many times, a heart attack strikes without warning. ThedaCare implemented the Code STEMI (which stands for "ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction"—the most serious type of heart attack, in which the blood supply to the heart is blocked) process to ensure these patients are treated immediately upon arrival to the emergency department.

A Goal to Achieve the Shortest "Door-to-Balloon" Time
This refers to the period between a patient’s arrival at the hospital and the moment when his or her artery is opened up. Within the first 10 minutes, specialists administer and interpret an electrocardiogram (ECG), and quickly make a diagnosis.

If the diagnosis is heart attack, specialists will perform a balloon angioplasty immediately, to open the blocked artery and get blood flowing to the heart again. If you receive emergency care at one of our rural hospitals, you will be flown to Appleton Medical Center via ThedaStar helicopter to receive further treatment. We can also transport you by ambulance, if weather conditions are unsafe for flying.

Since patient outcomes are better the sooner an artery is “opened” in a heart attack the national standard set by the American Heart Association is to have a door to balloon time of 90 minutes or less.  Our goal at ThedaCare is a door to balloon time of 60 minutes or less.  Efforts from Emergency Department Physicians, Cardiologists, Emergency Medical Personnel, and Hospital Administration help ThedaCare to routinely exceed this goal of 60 minutes or less.

Improved Outcomes
When it comes to heart attacks, it’s often said that "time is muscle." The longer it takes to open a blocked blood vessel, the greater the chances of heart damage. With ThedaCare’s Code STEMI process, your chances of having heart damage are greatly reduced.

Our quick diagnosis and treatment results in fewer complications, faster recovery times, and higher survival rates—helping you or your loved one get back to living a full, active life.
