Urinary incontinence, or lack of bladder control, can affect men and women of all ages, but it occurs most frequently in women. It affects 20% of women under the age of 65 and 20-30% of women over the age of 65. There are three types of urinary incontinence: stress, urge and mixed. Stress incontinence can be caused by childbirth, chronic constipation, chronic coughing or aging.
If incontinence occurs secondary to a strong sudden urge to void and the volume of the leak is large- this type of incontinence is called urge. A combination of the two is called mixed incontinence.
Although incontinence is a common problem; it is not a “normal” condition. Sometimes women have the false belief that nothing can be done to correct the problem. It can be treated successfully with conservative measures in Physical Therapy. In some cases, surgical treatment is also effective.
Physical Therapy services can be performed at the Wellness and Rehabilitation Center located at Appleton Medical Center. Physical Therapy is part of the medical team with your doctor. Your doctor can evaluate your situation and refer you for appropriate treatment.
