While there has been a steady decline in the number of injuries reported, they still represent a high portion of overall healthcare costs.
About 40 percent of the injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work in 2001 were sprains or strains, most often involving the back. Nearly 66 percent of those injured were men and occupations such as operators, fabricators, and laborers represented the highest incidence of injury with almost 37 percent occurring in manufacturing.
