What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that impacts one’s ability to sustain attention on tasks, as well as the difficulty to control impulses.
ADHD tends to remain present throughout a lifespan and generally gets identified early on by elementary teachers. Teachers begin to report difficulties with a student’s inability to maintain focus on tasks and sitting still, as well as difficulties with controlling impulsivity. They particularly notice problems in these areas when they begin to impact the student’s ability to meet their academic potential and establish peer relationships. It is at this time that teachers will encourage parents to seek out further evaluation.
These concerns will tend to impact the parent/child relationship and increase tension within the home.
Symptoms for ADHD include the following:
- Difficulty focusing in a variety of situations
- Organizational difficulties
- Inability to listen when being spoken to
- Trouble sitting or waiting in line
- Constantly interrupting others
- Impulsive behavior that is not age appropriate
- Hyperactivity
- Low self-esteem
