Emergency Department
The Emergency Department is where most people seek treatment during a crisis – a sick child in the middle of the night, a broken bone or severe cut or burn, chest pain that may be anything from a heart attack to heartburn, or an automobile crash or other type of accident.
Appleton Medical Center, Theda Clark Medical Center, and New London Family Medical Center all have state-of-the-art emergency departments that are open 24-hours every day and staffed by full-time, physicians and nurses who specialize in emergency medicine.
At Appleton Medical Center, the Emergency Department recently completed a major renovation and expansion. It features 18 treatment rooms situated in view of a centralized nursing station; a four-bed observation area with rapid diagnosis and treatment; a new ambulance garage with a decontamination room, respiratory isolation room and secure holding area; larger and more private waiting areas; centralized security and support services; a more convenient building entrance; and greater privacy for patients.
At Theda Clark Medical Center, the new Emergency & Trauma Center opened in 2002 and is the only facility in the Fox Valley that is verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level II Trauma Center. It features two state-of-the-art trauma rooms to treat either two individual trauma patients or mass casualty victims. Each trauma room also features:
• Digital X-ray which can be viewed instantly on a computer screen
• Portable ultrasound for FAST trauma exam for internal injuries
• Rapid infuser/fluid warmers
• Surgical lights for in-room procedures and surgery if necessary
• State-of-the-art ventilators
There are also two nurse triage areas, a special decontamination room, five acute care treatment rooms including one designed for infectious disease cases requiring isolation; a secure treatment room for law enforcement related cases; an ear, nose, and throat treatment room; a room for orthopedic cases; a room dedicated to OB/GYN cases and a general exam room.
The Emergency Departments at both Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark Medical Center also feature:

• In-room registration to reduce waiting times and speed patient flow
• Fully integrated care and monitoring equipment
• Break-away doors to allow for additional staff and equipment to treat patients
