Programs and Services - Cancer - da Vinci Robotic-Assisted Surgery - The da Vinci Robot

The da Vinci Robot

Da Vinci is a robotic surgery system that your surgeon controls during your radical prostatectomy procedure. Da Vinci acts as an extension of your surgeon's hands. The robot does not operate on its own. It can only perform maneuvers as directed by your surgeon. It allows the surgeon to:

  • Translate the movements of his or her hand, wrist and finger seamlessly into the precise movements of four robotic arms to conduct the operation
  • Achieve greater precision while operating, because for every three centimeters that his or her hand moves, the robot moves only one centimeter
  • Operate the robot with the same range of motion as the human hand and wrist
  • See the operating field, through a three-dimensional imaging system, with nine times magnification, from angles that wouldn’t be possible with traditional open surgery
  • Target only the damaged tissues, while preserving healthy tissues and nerves
