What is this medicine used for?

This medicine is given by injection (shots) to protect children against diseases caused by certain bacteria. Various types of this vaccine are given to children from 6 weeks to 6 years old.

How do I use it?

The shots are given by your health care provider. This medicine is not effective unless it is given by injection.

What should I watch out for?

Be sure to tell your health care provider if you have ever had a reaction to this or any other vaccine. If you have an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, trouble breathing, tightness in your chest), contact your health care provider right away. If you are unable to contact your health care provider right away, get emergency medical care or call 911 for help.

During the week after the shot, you may feel generally ill. If you do not feel better after a week has passed, contact your health care provider.

Females of childbearing age: This medicine is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

What are the possible side effects?

Along with its needed effects, your medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Some side effects may be very serious. Some side effects may go away as your body adjusts to the medicine. Tell your health care provider if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.

Life-threatening (Report these to your health care provider right away. If you are unable to contact your health care provider right away, get emergency medical care or call 911 for help): Allergic reaction (hives, itching, rash, tightness in your chest, swelling of your lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing).

Serious (report these to your health care provider right away): Fever over 101°F.

Other: Diarrhea, vomiting; redness or tenderness where the shot was given.

No significant drug interactions have been reported.

Keep a list of all your medicines (prescription, nonprescription, supplements, natural remedies, and vitamins) with you. Be sure that you tell all health care providers who treat you about all the products you are taking.
