There is an old adage about a house or home telling much about the family that lives there. So what does a firehouse tell one about the family of firefighters that resides there?

We had the pleasure to visit the Town of Vinland Fire Station to photograph their newly purchased vehicle, (a Spartan Chassis with a truck body built by Custom Fab and Body, LLC in Marion, Wis.). As a young firefighter moved the trucks out of the station for us, we had an opportunity to take a look around. As colorful as those bright red trucks seemed, so did some of the history of the station and of the men and women who proudly serve their community.

Why are fire trucks typically bright red? They explained to us that, when cars first appeared on the roads, they were all generally black. To help clear the roads in an emergency, fire engines were painted bright red so that they would visibly stand out.

As we continued our walk-through, a handmade wooden duty roster caught our eyes. The wooden template with hand-carved names represents a long-time tradition of many years of experience and service to the Town of Vinland.

Next, we witnessed the roster in their commons area and various sports trophies, which visibly represent the teamwork and camaraderie that they share with the surrounding communities.

On a large dry-erase board were remnants of what we call the Glascow Coma Score, a neurological scale which provides an objective way of recording a person’s level of consciousness. You can never be too prepared. Being a first responder or firefighter involves great focus on technical skills along with proactive-based learning.

Just before the trucks parked, we came across bundles of used fire coats and pants neatly piled next to boxes of fire-boots and helmets. They explained they were on their way to their new home in Nicaragua, a donation through the Wisconsin/Nicaraguan Partners of the Americas program.

The new fire engine was beautiful, but what stood out to us the most was the department’s values and history displayed throughout the firehouse. Home is not where you live, but rather where you are understood. This experience gave us all an understanding of the 24/7 dedication, sacrifice and commitment essential to become one of America’s heroes.

Event Helps Parents Remember Lost Babies

Losing a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn birth can be devastating to parents. A Sun., June 2, event will provide parents with the opportunity to celebrate their child’s memory.

ThedaCare’s Remembering Through Sharing Pregnancy Loss Program is sponsoring a free special event from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Gardens of the Fox Cities inside Appleton’s Memorial Park. Parents will participate in a number of activities, including decorating a bud vase or keepsake box from The Fire and receiving a massage offered by The Blue Sky School of Massage. Light refreshments will also be served and parents will have an opportunity to socialize with others facing the same challenge.

This is the third time Remembering Through Sharing has offered a spring event for parents. The group also sponsors a popular Walk to Remember and Annual Candlelight Memorial Service. Joan Heller, the Remembering Through Sharing Coordinator, said the spring event is designed for parents only and provides them with a special time to focus on their child.

“Our hope is that this afternoon event will help parents unwind and take a break from everything else going on in their lives,” she said. “We hope the weather will be nice and the parents can also go outside and enjoy the natural beauty of the gardens in addition to participating in the other activities.”

Parents interested in attending this special spring event can contact Heller at (920) 729-2087.

In Bobbi Chroninger’s case, that sudden movement left her with extreme shoulder pain. She walked over to see me – another benefit of being in a small town. I took one look at her shoulder and realized it was more than I could take care of in my Hilbert office so I referred her to ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus.

Located on the Appleton Medical Center campus, ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus brings together a variety of professionals from orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians to physical and occupational therapists who all work together to help patients. Depending on your concern – whether it’s chronic pain or an injury like Bobbi’s – the doctors and their staff will help you get started on the path of healing.

“Having the access to Orthopedics Plus was great,” Bobbi says. “Scott knew it was something he couldn’t help me with and just called over there and got me in.”

Orthopedic surgeon Eric Erickson, MD said the staff at ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus is focused on helping patients get the appropriate care. Since we’re all on the same electronic medical record system, he could view Bobbi’s medical history and what I had done when she came to see me.

“We’re fully integrated so we can see everything the primary care doctor has done and they can see what we do,” Dr. Erickson said. “The doctors can also contact our staff at any time to find out what’s going on or if they have questions.”

Dr. Erickson performed surgery on Bobbi in December. “I was glad Scott was able to follow what was happening by looking at the files online. It eliminated me having to tell him about it during other office visits,” said Bobbi, who is 37.

Dr. Erickson stressed there’s no cookie cutter approach when it comes to orthopedic care.

“We work to place the patient with the correct provider. Every patient is different and we understand their different needs and develop the right care plan for them,” he said. “We always communicate directly back with a patient’s primary care physician what our treatment plan is so everyone stays informed.”

Having access to orthopedic specialists as well as others in cardiology, cancer and more, is one of the benefits of being part of ThedaCare. We’re all connected and can view each other’s work and test results. It reduces duplication – if another doctor sees I have done a lab test, she doesn’t need to repeat it for example – and provides my patients with convenient access to specialists, who are less than 30 minutes away. Although I’m located in a small town, I’m happy I can offer my patients access to highly specialized care.

Working at the birthing center at New London Family Medical Center gave her some insight on who she wanted caring for her and her baby. In 2009, she selected Timothy Houlihan, MD, a family doctor at ThedaCare Physicians-New London, to deliver her first baby.

“I really liked how he was with all the other patients I’d seen him with,” said Schroeder, 27.

She is expecting her third child later this May and has been pleased with the level of care she has received from Dr. Houlihan, who is one of five family doctors at TCP-NL who provide obstetrical services.

“He is very down to earth, caring and very open with his opinion,” said Schroeder, noting he is also the family’s family doctor, providing well-child visits, physicals, urgent care needs and more.

“It’s fun to take care of these patients,” said Dr. Houlihan. “It is also an opportunity to bring a quality of care to them for the months ahead.”

Schroeder grew up having a family doctor and is pleased to have one to care for her family’s needs. “He knows you from the beginning, from the start of your pregnancy through your kids growing up,” she said. “He knows your whole history.”

She likes how he is with her kids, ages 3 and 22 months. “That brings a level of comfort because he is a familiar face,” she said, noting she brings the kids to her prenatal visits and the kids are comfortable around him, which prepares them for when they need to see the doctor. “He’s really good with kids.”

Schroeder said she knows she is in good hands with Dr. Houlihan. “It’s comforting that he knows my history of my other pregnancies,” she said, noting she had some preterm issues with her other two. “I really like him as a doctor.”

Schroeder also likes that “the clinic and the hospital are all right there.” She knows if she needs monitoring or additional testing, she can go next door to the hospital. “Being from the area, it’s nice to have the hospital right nearby,” she said.

She will receive individualized care at all times while at the birthing center. “I am comfortable delivering there,” she said. “I feel comfortable with all the nurses and staff and everything.”

Also serving with Dr. Houlihan at TCP-NL are Michal Fetterolf, MD; Sarah Haroldson, MD; Joseph Lamb, MD; and Subha Rajan, MD.

Someone Who Cares

Courtney Breit, a 16 year old girl, knows just how quick your life can change. On June 19, she was in a traumatic car crash that left her with lower extremity injuries, and required her to be flown by ThedaStar to Children’s Hospital for surgery.

During her two hospital stays, she had time to think about how rough her situation was, but knew there were children with situations worse than her own.

Every patient admitted to Children’s Hospital received a blanket, bear and pillowcases. Courtney said, “Receiving a blanket and a bear just make it feel a little less like a hospital and more like home. It helps to take your mind off of the pain.” That is when her mother said Courtney came up with the idea of giving back through the “Blankets and Bears from Someone Who Cares” project. Courtney explained, “People don’t always get to choose their situation. This is a small way to help out children.”

Courtney, along with her family and friends, had a “Teddy Bear Toss” at her high school’s volleyball game. The involvement from the crowd was amazing. She also organized days of blanket making with the help of her community. She relies on donations of materials for the blankets. She is thrilled with the support and donations she has received.

By Susan Woelfel, ThedaStar Communication Specialist

Better Breathers Support Group Now in Shawano

Free Meetings Provide Information, Support to People with Breathing Problems

When Terri Curtis was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease two years ago, the Tigerton woman felt alone and unsure about the future. But after meeting Mary Lapp, a respiratory therapist with ThedaCare At Home in Shawano, the now 68-year-old was filled with hope and on a mission to help other people living with lung diseases.

“When you get diagnosed, you just feel so alone and that you’re the only one living with this,” said Curtis, who is on the steering committee for a new support group in Shawano for people with breathing problems. “But while you don’t ever really get comfortable with having the disease, you do feel better once you know about what you’re facing and that there are other people living with it, too.”

Lapp said the new group, which is called Air It Up Better Breathers, will not only provide information to people with COPD, asthma or other respiratory diseases, but also be an outlet for them to talk about their shared challenges. While the group was her idea, Lapp has put together an active steering committee made up of several patients with lung disease who are eager to raise awareness and provide support to those who need it. “People can also learn from each other’s experiences and what may or may not have worked for them,” she said.

The first meeting will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wed., May 29, in the Pine Room at Shawano Medical Center. There is no cost to attend. Lapp said members will drive meeting discussion. “At the first gathering, we’ll ask people what topics they’re interested in and we’ll go out and find speakers to address the different topics,” she said.

Employees from Erickson Home Medical Equipment and the Menominee Tribal Clinic are also working with Lapp on the group.

Beyond education, Curtis said she hopes Air It Up Better Breathers can also spread hope for those living with chronic breathing problems. “Sometimes, you just want to vent and want to know you’re not alone. You can really learn a lot from other people – what worked for them, what didn’t,” she said. “There’s a lot of information out there and it sometimes gets fragmented so the group will provide a way to bring it all together.”

Curtis said she hopes the group also raises awareness about lung disease and people will learn about it and recognize their symptoms so they can be diagnosed earlier. “It’s a silent disease. You don’t think you have a problem until it’s suddenly so bad that you can’t ignore it anymore,” she said

Shawano Medical Center is a nonprofit hospital in Shawano. It serves 35,000 people in Shawano, Menominee, and surrounding counties. Shawano Medical Center includes a critical-access (25-bed) hospital, Wellness Works, Sports Medicine, and Shawano Community Hospice.

May is Trauma Awareness Month. You often hear me talk about what happens inside the Trauma Center at Theda Clark Medical Center. But this year is different. I want to talk about what happens outside of this building that makes all the difference.

Just as we have protocols and systems in place here at the Trauma Center so that each individual knows his or her role before a trauma event takes place, so too does the state have an organized approach to dealing with trauma situations that require a coordinated effort from multiple organizations.

The State Trauma System took nearly a decade to develop and establish, finally implementing initial trauma plan recommendations in 2001. With unintentional injury as the leading cause of death in Wisconsin for people age 1-44 years old (and the 4th leading cause of death for all age groups), the system has been much-appreciated and much-used ever since.

Last summer, 12 motorcyclists were traveling together when ten of them were struck by a car that crossed the center line on Hwy. 151 just north of Fond du Lac. The debris field stretched the length of two football fields. One rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash took place in a rural area in the middle of the afternoon. The closest hospital was approximately 11 miles away. The nearest trauma center – Theda Clark – stood 43 miles away. First responders on the scene were dispatched from the volunteer fire department in the Town of Calumet.

So much of the outcome for these patients depended on the decisions of those first responders to the incident being properly prepared and aware of the available resources. If any piece of the puzzle is missing, the whole system breaks down.

In all, nine patients were transported to definitive care at two separate hospitals. It required the help of three helicopters, five ambulances, two fire departments, multiple EMS and first responders, the Fond du Lac County sheriff’s department, the Wisconsin State Patrol, a medical examiner, the communications command center, a photo-journalist, a neighbor, a truck driver and many other bystanders to control the scene and get these patients the help they needed quickly and efficiently.

Several of the people involved in the horrific crash that day honestly had no business living through this. Yet they survived their injuries. This case exemplifies extraordinary teamwork and illustrates how multiple organizations work together to save lives.

People say “it takes a village.” In this case, it took a State Trauma System.

Riverside Medical Center wants to welcome summer with its 27th Annual RMC Fun Run.

Dean Sondrol, physical therapist, RMC Physical Therapy, hopes the weather will cooperate for the Sat., May 4, fun family event, which promotes health and fitness ”to get people in the community active. It’s a good way to start your summer. People will start with the fun run and the rest of the summer they’ll keep on being active.”

Sondrol said the event usually draws around 300 people. So far, 150 people have registered through an online feature. “It will be interesting to see if people are ready to get active outside and do the Fun Run,” he said.

The event starts at the Old Riverside Elementary School in Waupaca. Two separate races will be held – a 1-mile walk/run, which starts at 9 a.m. and a 5K event beginning at 10 a.m.

Sondrol said RMC is committed to its patients and encouraging events that promote healthy lifestyles. “Anything you can do to get people to be active and get out and exercise and walk” is good for the community,” he said. “As a hospital, it’s good to be promoting something in that way. Prevention is key.”

Chip timing is available. There will be a team challenge as well as best costume contest for an individual and team costume. Awards will be given to the first three females and first three male participants in each category.

Race day entries will be accepted on-line at www.tandhtiming.com. Gifts and prize drawings will be awarded for advance on-line registration only. Participants can also register the day of the race at Riverside School. Race day registration cut off time is 8:30 a.m. for the 1 mile and 9:30 for the 5K.

In addition to Riverside Medical Center, race sponsors include ThedaCare Physicians in Waupaca and Iola; Orthopaedic Specialists; Farmers State Bank of Waupaca, Wild Rose, Fremont; First National Bank, Chetek, Clintonville, Iola, Marion, Shiocton, Seymour, Waupaca, Weyauwega; Health and Fitness Headquarters; Waupaca Foundry, Inc.,; and the Auxiliary of Riverside Medical Center.

The doctors get to see it all – from obstetrics to well-child visits to adult and elderly care. “I like the relationships I develop with my patients,” said Timothy Houlihan, MD, noting that getting to know the patients and their backgrounds and histories is “an important part of the practice.”

Michael Fetterolf, MD, agreed, adding that family medicine often includes caring for the “whole package deal:” baby, mom, dad, siblings, even grandparents. “I think that’s the big advantage,” he said. “It completes the circle.”

The circle could start with obstetrics, when a woman comes in for a pre-conception consultation or to start prenatal visits. ThedaCare Physicians-New London offers five family doctors who also provide obstetrical services, including Cesarean deliveries.

Being the patient’s family doctor adds a close connection to a patient when care moves into the obstetrical side of things. “I have a handful of obstetric patients who I know very well,” said Subha Rajan, MD. “It’s not just another pregnant woman. You see the obstetric patients more often and develop a relationship with them and their family.”

Joseph Lamb, MD, agreed, noting that the obstetric side of family medicine is one of the fun aspects. “You see usually healthy people and usually healthy babies,” he said. “It’s a joyous occasion. You get to celebrate the birth of a baby. It’s just a privilege to be involved in the whole process. It’s neat to see the families grow and see them afterward.”

The doctors provide a quality of care to the moms, and their babies, during prenatal visits in the months before delivery. “You get to know the patients during the nine months,” said Dr. Houlihan. “It’s fun to take care of the patients. It’s exciting to be part of their care, help them feel at ease and not overly worried or concerned.”

Dr. Rajan emphasizes the need for prenatal visits, which allow doctors to closely monitor the growth and progress of the developing baby as well as keep an eye on the mother’s health through testing. “They only have 40 weeks to bring a healthy baby into the world,” she said. “The obstetric appointments are scheduled in such a way that specific points are covered each visit.”

Patients deliver in the state-of-the-art birthing center at New London Family Medical Center, which features spacious suites with whirlpool tubs and individualized care. “It’s really personal,” said Cheryl Seelig, practice administrator. “You’re going to get that same nurse time and time again. The staff is going to get to know you and your family. You’re going to get that personalized care, which is great.”

For the family doctors, the whole experience is great, from prenatal visits to delivery to caring for baby and the rest of the family afterward. “It’s happy medicine as opposed to chronic problems or things that you can’t fix,” said Dr. Fetterolf.

'Laughter' Event Raises Over $58,000

Funds Help Renovate Hospital Guest House, Hospice Rooms

More than 1,000 area residents laughed their way through a March 8 performance by Chicago’s legendary comedy troupe, The Second City, and helped raise more than $58,000 to benefit the Appleton Medical Center and Community Hospice Foundations.

“Laughter is the Best Medicine: The Laughing Matters Tour” featured some of Second City’s best sketches, songs, and improvisations from the group’s 45-year history. The funds raised from the event at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center were used to make improvements to Appleton Medical Center’s Guest House and the rooms at Cherry Meadows Hospice.

This was the fourth year for “Laughter is the Best Medicine” and plans are already underway for next year’s event, said Michelle Bauer, who co-chaired the event with Kim Beiser.

“The response this year was fantastic. We raised $10,000 more than we did last year and we had a lot of great sponsors,” she said. “Laughter is very healing and therapeutic, which makes this such a great event.”

Two sponsors increased their sponsorship and the event had 13 new sponsors, Bauer said.

WIXX and WLUK Fox 11 served as the media partners and JP Graphics of Appleton was the event’s print sponsor.

Founded in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy worlds best and brightest. The troupe’s alumni includes the following top names in comedy: Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Peter Boyle, Harold Ramis, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, George Wendt, Martin Short, John Candy, Bonnie Hunt, Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Horatio Sanz, Ryan Stiles and countless others.

When Shawano Medical Center affiliated with ThedaCare in 2011, the people of Shawano were promised a new hospital. More than two years later, some community members still ask why the existing 80-year-old Shawano Medical Center cannot simply be remodeled.

“Expectations have changed a lot since the original hospital was built more than eight decades ago,” said Dorothy Erdmann, CEO of Shawano Medical Center. “Patients expect to have operable air conditioning on hot summer days, yet our aging HVAC system has broken down during hot spells in the past several years. They expect attractive and soothing spaces, and to have privacy as they are rolled into surgery. There are design improvements and equipment upgrades being planned for the new medical center that will make our patients’ experience the best it’s ever been. And these changes are made possible through the smart investment in a new building, with all its possibilities.”

Erdmann explained the new facility will go far beyond replacement of a building that was constructed in the 1930s, an era of significantly different health care delivery. It will revolutionize the way Shawano families receive and participate in their own health care. “Most importantly, the new facility will have the soul of the community and its cultures embedded within it,” she said.

The design of the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano is in progress with an expected summer groundbreaking and fall 2014 opening. Its primary design inspiration is patient-focused and wellness-based health care for individuals and families. It will be built to deliver up-to-date medical care with an eye toward evolving to meet the requirements of future health care innovations.

Patient-focused means Shawano-area families will have all of their health care readily accessible in one location that places the highest priority on excellent health care, collaboration, comfort, and privacy. Patients and families will have direct access between the hospital and the existing ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano clinic. They will easily travel between inpatient rooms, outpatient rooms, the emergency department, family birth center, inpatient and outpatient surgery, rehabilitation services, community rooms, oncology services, offices for primary care and other specialty doctors and a retail pharmacy.

Wellness-based care is oriented toward keeping people healthy and out of the hospital instead of solely addressing acute health crises that may put them there. This type of health care uses local classes, support groups, and new technology to keep people healthy. ThedaCare at Work, ThedaCare at Home, and the Rural Health Initiative are examples of successful local community-based care services.

“We are keeping as much care in Shawano as possible. When it’s necessary, we are fortunate to have the option to plug into the vast resources of the larger ThedaCare organization. It’s a win-win for Shawano and our people,” Erdmann said.

ThedaCare (www.thedacare.org) is a community-owned health system consisting of Appleton Medical Center, Theda Clark Medical Center, New London Family Medical Center, Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca, ThedaCare Physicians, Ingenuity First, and other health care services. And among the runners and walkers are students of the Longfellow Running Club in Clintonville.

“It is neat that the Sturgeon Shuffle Board is promoting a healthy event for our kids to compete in,” said Karen Petermann of the running club, which includes runners from Longfellow as well Clintonville Middle School. “It is also neat that our participation in the Sturgeon Shuffle will benefit the New London Family Medical Center.”

The third annual event, which is on April 27, is a competitive 5 Mile and 2 mile road run/walk for all athletes, from serious racers to those who want to go the distance.

The route takes runners and walkers along the Sturgeon Trail, where, if the time is right, racers might catch a glimpse of the famous sturgeon doing their own run.

“It’s a nice event,” said Jim Ziegler, committee chair, noting he hopes for 400 participants in this year’s event. “We just have to hope for a nice day.”

Zielger welcomes the Longfellow Running Club as the honorary guest runners. The club has “done a phenomenal job of getting this young group of kids enthused about running,” he added.

All proceeds raised benefit the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports New London Family Medical Center and the communities it serves.

In the past, funds have been targeted for community programs for youth involvement, like the safe sitter classes, bike safety and Clintonville Middle School’s You Grow Girl program, a self esteem and wellness program designed to empower adolescent girls.

“We are excited to compete closer to home and to help support the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation,” said Petermann. “Many of our families depend on the services at the New London Family Medical Center so our Longfellow Running Club families are happy to support such a worthwhile program. Our Running Club and the WRHF share the same goals: we both actively promote healthy lifestyles. We are on the same team.”

Registration starts at 8 a.m. at New London Middle School and the race sets off at 9:30 a.m.

Awards are given to the top three in each age division as well as teams with greatest participation and most funds raised. “Instead of giving out standard generic medals, we went to a unique handmade ceramic coffee mug,” said Zigler, noting the mug will bear the new race logo. “It’s a nice award.”

One of the lessons learned from the Joplin tornado is some people did not listen to the warnings and take action by going to a safer location. Those surviving family members would urge you to “listen, act, and live” when you hear a tornado warning. If you hear a tornado warning issued for your area listen to it and then take action by going to the lowest level of your building. Have a TV, radio, or NOAA weather radio in your shelter area to monitor the storm along with your emergency supply kit.

The peak tornado season in Wisconsin is April to August, but tornadoes can occur any time of year, like the January 7, 2008 storms near Kenosha.

Tornados can occur anytime during the day or night, but are most frequent between 4pm and 9pm.

Know what we know! Everyone should have an emergency weather radio in their home. That way you’ll get the severe weather warnings as soon as National Weather Service issues the alert.

Note: Sirens are activated for those outside who may not have access to a radio. When you a hear weather siren’s, you should seek shelter immediately. Sirens also will be activated for Thunderstorms if winds greater than 60mph are expected.

Hospital Educator Named Immunization Champ

Organization Honors Jessica VanLannen for Hospitals’ ‘Cocooning’ Program

The woman behind an innovative project at ThedaCare hospitals to protect newborn babies from whooping cough is being honored as the first-ever immunization champion by the Northeast Wisconsin Immunization Coalition.

Jessica VanLannen, a registered nurse and a staff development educator at the Family Birth Center at Appleton Medical Center and the Theda Birth Center at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, developed the cocooning initiative to protect infants from the disease at both hospitals about a year ago. The project uses state funds to purchase the Tdap vaccine, which prevents whooping cough, and administer it to mothers of newborns, close family members and other caregivers.

By cocooning the newborn -- or wrapping him or her in the arms of family and friends who are protected against whooping cough -- the chance of contracting this disease is diminished, VanLannen said.

“We had a number of pertussis or whooping cough cases in our community and it made sense to me that we address the issue head-on,” said VanLannen, who helped ThedaCare’s hospitals in New London, Waupaca and Shawano roll out their own cocooning initiatives last fall. “By sharing with parents the importance of the vaccine and that by protecting themselves from this disease, they are protecting their babies, who aren’t old enough yet for the vaccine themselves.”

Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable, violent coughing.

VanLannen said staff members at the birth centers were all vaccinated against whooping cough and by sharing that information with parents, it reinforced the vaccine’s importance. “Most children are inoculated against whooping cough, but over time that protection wanes and it’s important to be re-vaccinated, especially if you are in contact with newborns, who have yet to be vaccinated.

VanLannen will receive the honor during a special meeting April 24 at the Appleton Public Library as part of the group’s National Infant Immunization Week celebration.

“The coalition commends Jessica’s tireless efforts in implementing the Tdap immunization program within her hospital system. The Tdap Cocooning Program strives to increase immunization rates of parents and caregivers of young infants to prevent the spread of whooping cough (pertussis),” said Karen Volkman, chair of the Northeast Wisconsin Immunization Coalition. “Jessica’s knowledge and passion for disease prevention has yielded system-wide policies within five Wisconsin hospitals and is being used as a model for other programs within the state.”

While VanLannen is receiving the honor, she said the cocooning project would not have been possible without the support of ThedaCare leadership and hospital staff members. “We had a lot of support from everyone at ThedaCare and in the hospitals for this initiative,” she said. “While I’m excited to receive the award, I’m more excited that the project is taking hold and more newborns are being protected from this disease.”

Making medical decisions isn’t always easy – especially when those choices need to be made at an emotional time. Now imagine not being able to make that decision due to a medical condition – your loved ones will need to act on your behalf. Many families unfortunately face this scenario, but you can do something about it by participating in National Healthcare Decisions Day on April 16.

ThedaCare, along with national, state, and community organizations, will use April 16 to draw attention to the information and documents adults with decision-making capacity need to ensure their wishes are known regarding their healthcare decisions.

To support National Healthcare Decisions Day, documents will be available at all ThedaCare sites to provide information and tools for employees and the public to create written advance directives. These directives are in accordance with Wisconsin state laws and used to encourage the discussion about your wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers. The directive allows people to clearly communicate their healthcare wishes and name the person who would make medical decisions on their behalf if they are not able to tell health care providers what they want. This service is provided free of charge by ThedaCare.

“If more adults of all ages had a written healthcare direction in place, fewer families and healthcare providers would have to struggle with making difficult decisions without guidance from the patient,” said Greg Long, MD, chief medical officer for ThedaCare. “Advance directives help us as medical providers honor the patient’s wishes when the time comes to do so. It’s important to take action before a crisis comes up. This is vital not only for older adults but young adults, too.

Dr. Long said National Healthcare Decisions Day should spark important conversations families need to have regarding their healthcare decisions. “You need to do more than just fill out the documents. You need to talk about them, too. This isn’t a subject people like talking about, but it’s an important one. Don’t you want to know your loved one’s wishes? Think how much better you – and they -- will feel after having the discussion,” he said.

Jason Krueger is no stranger to Shawano and neighboring communities. He grew up on a small farm in Clintonville and now works as an advanced practice nurse practitioner at ThedaCare Physicians – Shawano. He joins several other ThedaCare providers who grew up in and around Shawano, and who have chosen to continue to call the community home. Their commitment to Shawano supports ThedaCare’s focus on community-based care.

Importantly, his knowledge of the community and its many cultures help Krueger give his patients the best care every day, and help ThedaCare deliver a personal patient experience. “Growing up in this area gives me a better idea of what people’s health needs are,” Krueger said. “Shawano has such a diverse population with a huge mix of cultures, including agricultural, industrial and commuters to urban areas.” Growing up on a farm has also helped him understand the mindset of some of his patients – many of whom have limited resources.

Krueger always knew he wanted to work in a field where he could help others. After working in an emergency room setting for 10 years, he saw a real need for providers in rural areas and decided to go back to school to become a nurse practitioner.

Although the pace of the clinic is different from the emergency room, Krueger is settling in nicely. He enjoys ThedaCare’s strong emphasis on team work, prevention and health maintenance, as opposed to reactionary care.

Krueger earned his bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and received his master’s degree from Concordia University. His professional certifications include advanced cardiac and pediatric advanced life support. He belongs to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Krueger still has family in the Shawano area. He lives on a hobby farm with his family and enjoys fishing, hunting and working with old machinery. He also participates in historical reenactments in his free time.

Menopause 'Hot' Topic of Free Appleton Program

Medical Expert to Discuss How to Manage Symptoms, Hormonal Changes

The truth is that while I grew up in that big city of Appleton, I’m a small town guy at heart and love being in this community.

The pace of life – and the medical office – in Hilbert and other smaller communities is very different from what it’s like in bigger cities. I get to know my patients and families – something providers with practices in larger areas may not always have the opportunity to do. Developing these close relationships allow me to do a better job when it comes to delivering high-quality care since I know a lot more about them than just what’s on their medical chart. Being part of a small town community is a lot of fun – I enjoy hearing about what’s happening, such as the recent sturgeon spearing season.

I also enjoy watching families as they grow. It’s fun seeing how a patient grows from a toddler to elementary school students to a teenager and watching how they and their families change.

With today’s technology, I have access to all of the same information and resources as my colleagues do in larger areas. I don’t feel like being here is a disadvantage at all. I’ve always enjoyed helping people and a career in medicine lets me do just that. I use my medical skills – along with solid listening skills – to work with patients on their unique health needs and concerns.

As for why I chose family medicine instead of a specialty like orthopedics, I simply like the variety. In family medicine, you get to take care of patients of all ages from infants on up and no day is ever the same. You may see patients about a chronic health problem, such as diabetes; visit with a family for their baby’s well check; or tend to someone battling a virus or an injury.

Before I started in family medicine, I worked in hospice care and that really opened my eyes to the importance of compassion – something I carry on to my practice here in Hilbert. Whether someone has high blood pressure or battling the flu, I do my best to understand where they’re coming from and work with them to come up with a treatment plan that will fit their needs. It’s a collaborative relationship. I know if patients aren’t involved with coming up with a solution to their problem, they are less likely to be on board with the plan of care.

I really enjoy my job and I hope that comes through when meeting with patients and providing them with the care they need.

How do you want to live at the end of your life? It’s a vitally important question, and one that too many individuals, families and health care providers never ask of each other.

“Consider the Conversation: A Documentary on a Taboo Subject” aims to ask this question and inspire meaningful dialogue between patient and doctor, husband and wife, parent and child, minister and parishioner. Throughout the film, life’s final chapter is reframed as a normal process -- one rich in opportunity for human development rather than a failed medical event.

ThedaCare At Home is hosting a special event at 6 p.m. Thurs., March 21 at the Menominee Casino Convention Center in Keshena. Attendees will watch “Consider the Conversation: A Documentary on a Taboo Subject” followed by a panel discussion with an attorney, chaplain, and social worker. The event is free and no registration is required.

Teri Metropulos, ThedaCare At Home hospice manager and event emcee, said “Consider the Conversation” raises a lot of important questions that people need to consider.

“We need to start talking about end-of-life care, a very sensitive issue,” she said. “We want to empower individuals to share with their loved ones and providers what their wishes are, before a crisis occurs. When those wishes are known and respected, we avoid unnecessary or unwanted interventions or side effects that lessen one’s quality of life when life expectancy is limited.”

Documentary filmmakers Mike Bernhagen, director of community engagement and care partner relations at Rainbow Hospice Care in Jefferson, and Terry Kaldhusdal, a fourth grade teacher and filmmaker from Oconomowoc, were both inspired to delve deeply into end-of-life issues after experiencing the loss of precious family members. Bernhagen watched his mother Rita die from congestive heart failure and vascular dementia without the benefit of the gentle physical, emotional and spiritual support provided by hospice care, a service about which he knew very little at the time. Kaldhusdal helped his 53-year-old brother Peter as he journeyed through his last two years of pancreatic cancer, ultimately under hospice care, and was inspired to learn more – and tell more – about his experiences and choices.

The duo shot more than 70 hours of film over the course of two years of interviews with patients, family members, doctors, nurses, clergy, social workers, and national experts from around the country. Released in 2011, “Consider the Conversation” has been widely distributed via the National Educational Telecommunications Association, airing 355 times on 157 PBS stations in 29 states. To date, the film has won nine major awards including one for journalistic excellence and four for social change and viewer impact.

In late September, the Wisconsin Medical Society cited “Consider the Conversation” as the catalyst for a statewide initiative called Honoring Choices Wisconsin to make conversations about advanced care planning a standard part of patient care. The goal of the society’s initiative is to have individuals make their wishes known – whether they want heroic measures taken or not – as they face emergencies or terminal illness.

Bernhagen explained that American medicine’s success at fighting disease and extending life has created a new problem. About 50 years ago a cultural shift began, and most people can now expect to die slowly and incrementally, likely in a hospital or nursing home. Because most Americans will not die at home, they typically avoid discussing issues of death and dying.

“When death migrated out of the family home, a cultural void was created. Now it is widely viewed with fear and denial and uncertainty – as if death is optional. It’s time to put the proverbial horse back in front of the cart,” he said. “People from a cross section of the community have come together at these events and recognized there’s something universally human about end-of-life – something that transcends what makes us different – and that is the desire to express one’s hopes, fears and wishes about a very normal part of life.”

Respiratory therapists may not be super models, but that won’t stop them from showing off the latest trends in sleep apnea wear at a style show next month.

ThedaCare At Home’s sleep respiratory therapists will model the newest designs of sleep apnea masks at a free A.W.A.K.E. sleep mask style show on Tues., April 16, at Liberty Hall in Kimberly.

Since a comfortable, well-fitting mask is the key to successful therapy, the evening will feature the most popular CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure masks). Registration, light refreshments and an opportunity to visit with manufacturer’s representatives to discuss equipment options begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the style show at 6:30.

Sleep apnea is a chronic condition requiring long-term management. If untreated, it can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity and diabetes. CPAP equipment and supplies can help treat sleep apnea.

There is no cost for this fun-filled evening, but advanced registration is required.
Locally, more than 62% of adults are overweight or obese. Obesity is a leading cause of many preventable health conditions including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, liver disease, orthopedic problems, and more. In large part due to obesity, youth born today represent the first generation in U.S. history that is not expected to outlive their parents. Fox Cities and Oshkosh area 2011 LIFE Studies as well as public health needs assessments have identified obesity, inactivity and nutrition issues high on the list of priorities.

The two-day summit is being organized and funded by United Way, area healthcare systems, CHAT (Community Health Action Team) and public health departments in the Outagamie, Winnebago and Calumet county region. The framework of the summit will feature an HBO film series developed with support from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health entitled “Weight of the Nation.” The four-part series addresses consequences of obesity, the impact on children, personal choices and the challenges to community change. These films will serve as the basis for gaining local understanding and creating community dialogue. Summit organizers hope whatever comes of this two-day event will build upon existing efforts already underway by many organizations.

The summit will wrap up March 8. A follow-up meeting to the summit is scheduled for April 10 for attendees who are interested in furthering this cause.

Stress Reduction Class Returns

Popular Waupaca Class Teaches How to Respond to Stress

Stress is related to all our major illnesses. A class at Riverside Medical Center (RMC) will provide ways to recognize, reduce and respond to stress.

“Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction” will be held three consecutive Thursdays, March 14, 21 and 28 at RMC in the School Conference Room.

Barb Achten, BS, a licensed massage therapist, who is teaching the classes, said participants will discover how unconscious thoughts and feelings can increase stress and undermine well-being. They will learn how to develop inner resources that respond rather than react to stressors. This improves self esteem, reduces physical and psychological symptoms associated with stress, and results in a greater ability to relax.

Achten said the class has been popular as folks want to learn how to deal with the stressors in their lives. “We are learning some very real skills as to how to come back to being in the now” she said.

This program will run from 6:30-8 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. Each person must register separately. To register, call (715) 258-1119 or visit www.thedacare.org and click on Classes.

Achten, who has been teaching mindfulness since the 1990s, trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn, head of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center's Stress Reduction Clinic. Kabat-Zinn, a best-selling author, helped propel mindfulness meditation into the mainstream with his books including “Full Catastrophe Living" and "Wherever You Go, There You Are."

ThedaCare has a national reputation for cutting out the waste when it comes to the delivery of healthcare. Now, the health system is seeking to literally cut the waste and make the planet a bit greener.

Paul Linzmeyer, a business leader with more than 20 years of executive experience including serving as president of Bay Towel in Green Bay, was recently hired as ThedaCare’s first sustainability leader.

“ThedaCare has a proven track record with its lean and quality initiatives and my role is to combine evidence-based design with best management practices to help the organization become more sustainable,” he said. “ThedaCare’s mission is to improve the health of the community and one way to do that is through the use of less water and energy. At the same time, we want to educate employees and the community and share what we’re doing.”

Linzmeyer plans to use the lean tools already in place to help hospitals, clinics, and offices to be a bit greener by looking at ways to reduce energy and water usage as well as the amount of material sent to landfills.

“We’ll use evidence-based design combined with some of the lean tools to identify and make the changes,” said Linzmeyer, adding he is currently doing an audit of all facilities to get a baseline of how much water and energy is used and how much waste goes to landfills. From there, he’ll develop plans to bring those numbers down. Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark Medical Center will be the first two facilities to be targeted, but all sites will eventually be affected by the changes.

“The two Fox Cities hospitals are the largest users so if we can make some changes there, it will add up to a real difference,” Linzmeyer said.

Sustainability efforts are not just about improving the bottom line, he said. “Doing these things is one way we can better care for our planet and help make our community a better place to live,” Linzmeyer said.

The efforts will be easy to track and if one effort isn’t working, another one can be tried. “There are a lot of strategies we can use to reduce our carbon footprint and there are tools in place to show what this change or that change has done.”

Linzmeyer has extensive experience when it comes to sustainability. For the past five years, he had his own consulting business focused on helping organizations with their own sustainability efforts. He also was the first chair of a New North committee focused on sustainability efforts and is active in several organizations dedicated to sustainability, including the OECD Sustainable Manufacturing and Eco-Innovation Committee (Paris).

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Linzmeyer is a past board member of New North Inc., past board chairman of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and a past board chairman of the Wisconsin Council on Workforce Investment.

Learn How to Love Your Heart

Program Presenter is Former Riverside Medical Nurse with New Role in Cardiology

Lou Ann Mokwa, APNP, used to roam the halls of Riverside Medical Center (RMC) as a nurse. Now she returns to the facility as a cardiology nurse practitioner, ready to help cardiac patients through the various stages of their heart health.

She will give a free presentation, “Learn how to love your heart and have your heart love you” at 6:30 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 14 at the 900 Building, Riverside Medical Center.

Mokwa will provide basic heart facts like risk factors and ideas for lifestyle changes and statistics specific to Waupaca. There will also be a question and answer session.

The event also aims to reintroduce Mokwa, an employee of Appleton Cardiology, to the community. “We all have known her since being nurses in the hospital,” said Marci Reynolds, RN, CDE and supervisor of Health and Wellness at RMC. “We thought we would have her be the speaker so people can meet her and know who they will be seeing when they go in for follow ups. Nurse practitioners spend a lot of time with the patients.”

Attendees can also tour the facility, checking out the gym and learning about programs available, like the afternoon exercise program, diabetes education, Boot Camp and other programs.

Appleton Papers has opened the first of its kind workplace medical clinic in the Fox Valley on the company’s Appleton campus. The Appleton workplace medical clinic is managed by ThedaCare and staffed with a primary care physician, registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse, and two health coaches.

The purpose of the workplace clinic is to improve employee wellness by providing convenient, timely access to health care professionals. The clinic offers the opportunity for longer and more frequent visits with health care professionals, and greater emphasis on health risk assessment follow up, disease management, health coaching, and lifestyle management programs. Clinic staff will also provide continuity of care with primary care physicians and other health care providers.

“Our decision to offer employees easy access to a workplace medical clinic is simply taking our commitment to promoting a culture of improved health and wellness within our company to the next level,” said Kerry Arent, senior vice president of human resources.

“Healthy employees have a better quality of life, are more engaged, and work more safely. Improved health and wellness can help lower health care costs for employees and our company – a scenario where we win together.”

Preventive care, disease and wellness management, and basic first aid services will be provided at no charge to Appleton employees, their spouse or domestic partners, and dependents age 18 or older at no charge. Advanced testing and other more complicated diagnoses treated within the clinic will require a $45 fee.

“ThedaCare partnered with Appleton to create a unique model to care for Appleton employees and to help control their healthcare costs,” Sandy Panzer, RN, MSN, vice president of health services, ThedaCare at Work, said.

“The main focus will be to improve the health of the employees and spouses at little cost to the employee. Our team of providers, including primary care physician Dr. Kay Theyerl, will be able to manage employees’ health by addressing chronic diseases in group settings and with other non-traditional methods, as well as caring for minor illnesses in more cost effective ways.”

Opening a workplace medical clinic is just the latest step in Appleton’s long standing commitment to employee health. Last year the Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA) awarded Appleton the prestigious gold-level workplace wellness award for the company’s onsite wellness program. Appleton’s dedication to employee health began in the 1940s with a groundbreaking partnership with the local YMCA, offering subsidized memberships for employees. Appleton’s long-standing dedication to employee health and wellness made them a perfect partner for ThedaCare.
