Ladies Golf Outing Invaded by the Guys at Hole #8

When they get to Hole #8, golf teams in the annual Friends of Hospice Ladies Golf Outing can expect to be surprised. For starters, they won’t be greeted by ladies. This tee is the domain of the Guys.
Hole # 8 has been, in recent years, Margaritaville, a pirate ship, a M*A*S*H* unit, Bourbon Street, and “home on the range.” Golfers pause their game for a moment to taste a treat, have a photo taken, and try their hand at some golf-related games of skill (or luck). In the process, they can’t help but drive away with a smile.
And that is what the “Guys” – ThedaCare’s Tony Jagla and Tom Bruce – are hoping for. Tony is plant operations manager at Shawano Medical Center and Tom is materials management manager at Appleton Medical Center.
“We saw this type of thing at other golf outings, and we wanted to do something for the ladies,” Tony said. “We want to make it enjoyable so teams keep coming back.”
“Back” means a return to the Ladies Golf Outing, now in its 14th year at the Golden Sands Golf Club. The fundraiser is sponsored by Friends of Hospice, which is part of the ThedaCare Family of Foundations. Friends of Hospice supports local hospice patients and families. They are also helping to create a hospice suite in ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano, which is now under construction.
The golf outing includes 18 holes of golf, dinner, prizes and, if Tony and Tom have anything to say about it, lots of “extras.”
“Tony and I have had many of the participants saying how much they enjoy what we do and that they look forward each year to see what we have come up with. Despite the long day, we probably have as much fun as the gals as we dress in theme costumes and get to interact with all of the ladies on the golf course,” Tom said. “We do all of this in the name of good fun for a great cause!”
This year the golf outing will be held on July 30. For information on reserving a team (ladies only!), call Golden Sands at (715) 745.2189.
