• The Role of Interior Design and Art

    Posted 16 October 2015 1:53 PM by TCAuthor3

Decades of good quality research have proven that the atmosphere in which a patient receives health care can meaningfully affect his or her spirits and feelings of anxiety, peace and security.  When people feel safe and calm, they heal better and more quickly. This truth guided decisions about how to design, decorate and even orchestrate the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano.

  • People Feel Better and Heal Better at Home

    Posted 23 September 2015 10:10 AM by TCAuthor3

We continue to build confidence in the level of care in Shawano at the same time we are building our facilities. ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano is a critical access hospital that is held to the exact same standards as ThedaCare’s larger urban hospitals. In 2006, the new clinic cost $20 million. ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano is a $52 million investment. In my role as a leader for ThedaCare hospitals system wide, I am honored to help put money where our heart is—and we’ve put a lot of heart and soul into Shawano and its people. Congratulations on your handsome new medical center.

  • Wait Until You See It

    Posted 21 September 2015 9:42 AM by TCAuthor3

Four short years ago, I started meeting with hundreds of people from all walks of life to share ideas about designing our new Shawano hospital, all the way from ambulance garages to artwork. We understood this to be our opportunity to build a modern medical center that also communicated who we are as a diverse and vibrant community. Then came the foundation’s fundraising efforts that were nothing short of phenomenal. The construction crews from Boldt were always professional craftsmen of the highest order. Some of my days sped from early-morning coffee to late-night leftovers eaten at the refrigerator door, and I was left wondering, “How did my day go so fast? What did I achieve? What do I tackle tomorrow?”

  • Waiting to Exhale

    Posted 10 September 2015 3:58 PM by TCAuthor3

This is my last blog about the construction of our new hospital in Shawano. I started these entries in 2013 when we broke ground at the new site. Each month, I wrote about topics that were important at the time—the hottest projects of that period. We now stand at the brink of move day, which culminates with the closure of Shawano Medical Center on Sept. 20, the moving of our last stabilized patients, and the last transfer of employees to ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. Waiting to exhale—that’s how most of us feel.

  • ThedaCare Foundation - Shawano: Exploring the Possibilities

    Posted 2 September 2015 1:16 PM by TCAuthor3

A new medical center in a small, rural city. Impossible. A building that is both beautiful and efficient, bright but energy efficient, welcoming but private, modern as an iPad and comfortable as a favorite chair.  A capital campaign that will raise over $2 million in two years’ time. Impossible, impossible – absolutely impossible. Except, a new, beautiful, efficient, patient friendly medical center will open this month, in Shawano, Wis. Some of the things that make it beautiful, efficient and patient-friendly are the result of a successful $2.3 million capital campaign. The community summoned its will, and what seemed impossible is now a reality.

  • Shawano Clinic Welcomes Hospital and Staff

    Posted 6 August 2015 8:22 AM by TCAuthor3

What do you do when a new family moves into your neighborhood? Do you stop over with cucumbers from your garden or a bunch of fresh cut flowers? Or are you more likely to offer a firm handshake and an introduction over a backyard fence? Now reframe this situation so that the new neighbor is a brand new hospital, and you are the clinic who’s been on the same site for nine years already. That’s a little bit what it feels like for the doctors and staff at ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano as they watch the finishing touches get put on the adjacent ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano, all in preparation for a September 20 opening day.

  • Rich Stories of Healing and Community Involvement Abound – and Will Grace the Hospital Walls

The “human mind is a story processor, not a logic processor,” said a very wise man, Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist and researcher at New York University. His observations about the workings of the human brain got me thinking about health care. We constantly juggle the relentless needs of reporting statistics, calibrating doses, and crunching numbers, with the softer, kinder, warmer side of our jobs. This is something I see every day – caring, nursing and nurturing moments that we remember and repeat to others.

Volunteer greeters in a hospital do so much more than just give directions. They help put people at ease and let them know that someone is here to help them. It is amazing how much can be accomplished with just a pad of maps, a yellow highlighter, and a kind, concerned smile. Why volunteer? Our current volunteers can tell you about the satisfaction they get from helping others, or from being part of a team.

  • Hospital Move Like Ants on a Mission

  • Captains and Superusers Lead Hospital Move

Moving to a new hospital takes a lot of planning—about a year’s worth, to be exact. If you were to visit our weekly three-hour Tuesday hospital move meetings, you’d find 52 people focused on two large projection screens reviewing a list of more than 300 planning tasks. For example, this week we talked about defining the process for the wireless nurse call system and how to move compressed air cylinders, then transitioned to listing the location of each department’s mail boxes and detailing the process for sending dirty dishes to the dish room.

  • Nursing Neighborhood in Hospital Like Our Own neighborhood Where We Live

    Posted 2 April 2015 12:50 PM by TCAuthor3

The nursing neighborhood design of our new hospital reminds me of the way our own families and neighborhoods work. When we are close to people, we know their routines, preferences and needs. A newspaper left on her stoop too long might mean we should check on the elderly neighbor next door. Every parent knows when his or her child suddenly looks “not quite right” with the onset of illness. Some people want to hold a hand during difficult times, while others prefer to rest quietly alone. As our nurses continue to provide expert and compassionate care in our hospital, we are happy to provide them, and our patients, with a new layout to better know and care for our neighbors and families.

This year, workers can take off their heavy coats and work inside the building heated with a gas heating system.

  • New Hospital Will Be Energy Efficient; Warmth and Comfort Present

On these cold winter nights, I leave Shawano Medical Center and can feel the warm air coursing through the building, as it should for a medical center that runs 24/7. Admittedly, it gets a lot quieter at the hospital in the overnight hours, yet our heating system still exchanges cool air for warm air at the same rate. It’s called a constant volume system. When we move to the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano, we’ll make the switch to a much more efficient variable air and volume system, one that can sense the occupancy of parts of the hospital and heat or cool it accordingly.
