From the earliest stages of planning, the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano has been described as not just a hospital, not just a clinic, but a wellness hub for the community.

The vision is that the hub will promote wellness activities and programs throughout the area. With that in mind, the Shawano Medical Center Foundation is now requesting grant applications for 2015 for area nonprofit organizations with good ideas for building a healthy community.

We know the road to good health can start in a hospital or clinic, but that is not the only way we can have an impact on the health of the community. There are groups in the community who are already committed to making us all healthier, and the Foundation recognizes the value of their contribution.

Last year, the Foundation donated $12,600 to community programs within Shawano Medical Center and in the large area that it serves. The Foundation supported the Alzheimer’s Association with a $5,000 grant for its “Memory Café.” The café provides information and support for those living with dementia and their families. The Perry Initiative, which helps high school girls explore careers in orthopedics, received $5,000. A $2,600 grant supplied electronic and conventional games and other diversions for patients who are rehabilitating in the Shawano Medical Center’s Transitional Care program.

We are inviting area agencies to apply for a Foundation grant. These grants are for nonprofit groups in our service area, and provide a benefit for our community’s health. We are looking forward to supporting some exciting new ideas.

Grant applications must be submitted by March 2, 2015, and will be awarded shortly after that date. More details about the grant are included in the application. To get an application, send a request to me at or (715) 526-7149.
