The 15th annual Ladies Golf Outing will be held July 29, and registrations are already coming in for this popular event. The tournament is a day of activities hosted by the Golden Sands Golf Course Ladies League, and benefitting Friends of Hospice.

The day includes food and refreshments, golf holes enhanced with unique games of skill, a even 18 holes of golf. The outing supports Friends of Hospice, a group of volunteers and donors who help Hospice staff care for hospice patients and faimilies with compassion, warmth and dignity.

One of the major projects of Friends of Hospice has been input to the design and features of the new Hospice rooms at ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. Although many hospice patients remain at home, some patients have issues that require them to be in a hospital setting. When that happens, the staff tries to make the hospice rooms feel as homelike as possible.

In the new medical center, the hospice room is next to a private family room. Both will face the courtyard. The family room will be similar to a hotel room, with a recliner, sofa sleeper, computer desk, fridge, TV, table, and chairs. The inclusion of these family-oriented furnishings is a result of the input from Friends of Hospice, said Julie Kressin, project manager for ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano.

“Friends of Hospice input was instrumental in determining what necessities would be important to provide for the Family during their stay with their loved one.  Their input identified what would be put into the family room – comfort for a short term stay, with amenities equal to a hotel room,” Julie explained. “This space would allow them to stay close to their loved one during a critical time, and not have to travel back and forth from a hotel.  Therefore, the refrigerator,  coffeepot, microwave, shower, sofa sleeper, etc.”

Family members will be welcome to sleep comfortably in the family room--there is a sofa sleeper for that purpose. They can bring food from home and heat it in the microwave, adding to the homelike atmosphere.

Hospice patients will continue to receive the same high quality consistent care from the Medical Surgical nursing staff. Staff and family also will benefit from the support of the Hospice team.

“Our goal is to meet the holistic needs of the patient and family,” Julie said.
