Annual Wolf River Sturgeon Shuffle Set to Go

March 28, 2012

Competitive 5-Mile and 2-Mile Walk/Run on April 28

Organizers for the 2nd Annual Sturgeon Shuffle are anticipating walkers and runners from all over to participate in an event that benefits local health care programs.

“It's amazing what we can accomplish as a region while working together to promote wellness,” said Laurie Shaw, executive director, New London Area Chamber of Commerce, who is co-chairing the event with Dr. Jim Ziegler at Wolf River Veterinarian Clinic.  “This event excites me because so many people at different ages and fitness levels have chosen to participate.”

The 5-mile and 2-mile road run or walk is on Sat., April 28. It starts at New London Middle School and takes participants along the New London’s Wolf River Sturgeon Trail.

Last year, participants were treated to the site of the giant sturgeon rollicking in the water on the way to the Wolf River.

“This year the sturgeon beat us to the start line,” said Deborah Johnson, executive director, Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation. “This year’s unseasonably warm weather has given way to an early running of the sturgeon.”

But Johnson still anticipates a positive event, which benefits the Foundation’s outreach programs in the communities it serves. “This is an exciting event in a great setting for a great cause,” said Johnson. “Participants can enjoy a healthy morning walk with friends and neighbors while raising money for future health and wellness programs in their community.”

Last year, over 200 runners and walkers participated and more than $5,000 was raised.

“New London is proud to host this popular wellness event for the second year,” said Shaw. “The Sturgeon Shuffle offers participants the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful Wolf River Sturgeon Trail while helping the foundation to raise funds which will be reinvested into area wellness programs.”

This year, the Honorary Event Chairs will be 20 young ladies from Clintonville Middle School’s You Grow Girl program, a self esteem and wellness program designed to empower adolescent girls. This pilot program was funded through proceeds of last year’s Sturgeon Shuffle.

Additionally, funds from the 2011 Sturgeon Shuffle provided for a 2012 Bike/Skate Safety Rodeo, scheduled for May 12 2012, and the Safe Sitter certification program being offered throughout 2012 in New London, Clintonville and Manawa.

“The Foundation’s vision is to help improve the health and well being of our community through inspired partnerships and philanthropy,” said Deborah.

This year’s event is being promoted locally, regionally and nationally with the anticipation of over 300 participants.

“We look forward to welcoming all the participants and the many community friends and neighbors who have supported this event,” said Shaw.

The Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, supports New London Family Medical Center (NLFMC) and the communities it serves.
