Chicago’s Second City Troupe to Headline ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’

The Appleton Medical Center and Community Hospice Foundations are joining forces to engage the Fox Cities community in the uplifting and healing benefits of laughter as they welcome Chicago’s legendary comedy troupe, The Second City, to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in March.

Loaded with some of the best sketches, songs and improvisations from Second City’s 45-plus year history, the troupe’s performance puts a new twist on fundraising for the two foundations, as the majority of the ticket sales from “Laughter is the Best Medicine” will be used to directly benefit patients and their families receiving cancer and hospice care through services provided by ThedaCare.

“There is such a tremendous need for financial support for cancer and hospice care services that aren’t covered by insurance, and this fundraising evening is designed to give the community something they can wrap their hearts around,” noted Kim Beiser, foundation board member and event chair. “It also gives area residents the opportunity to make a huge positive impact on area cancer and hospice patients and their loved ones who are grappling with the physical and emotional challenges of fighting a life threatening illness.”

Tickets for the 8 p.m. Friday, March 2, performance are $25 each.  Tickets go on sale Jan. 9, and may be purchased at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center Ticket Office or by calling (920) 730-3760.  Tickets will also be offered for sale online through Ticketmaster or by calling (800)-982-2787.

With the holidays just around the corner, the two foundations wanted to get the word out early so residents can make plans to “save the date” to attend as they catch up with relatives and friends during this festive time of year. Sharing the date now also gives other community businesses the opportunity to join The Avenue 91.1 in sponsoring the event and supporting this great cause, according to Beiser.

“This is a five-star comedy show and we’re proud to bring such a world-renowned comedy troupe to the area for a delightful evening of laughter and fun that can also truly make a great difference for the community.  Laughter soothes the soul and gets your mind off your troubles no matter what they are. It’s very healing and therapeutic, which makes this such a neat event,” Beiser said.

Founded in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy worlds best and brightest. The troupe’s alumni includes the following top names in comedy: Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Peter Boyle, Harold Ramis, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, George Wendt, Martin Short, John Candy, Bonnie Hunt, Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Horatio Sanz, Ryan Stiles and countless others.
