October 25 Waupaca Event Supports and Entertains
A creative event to benefit the Waupaca County Women's Assistance Fund will take place later this month. “Save the Girls – an Uplifting Experience!!” will hold an entertaining and educational event at 6:30 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 25, at the Waupaca Ale House. The event is free to the public but registration is requested.
“This event honors those who have had breast cancer as well as raises awareness for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer,” said Kate Saunders, exhibit chair for this event.
The event, which includes refreshments, musical entertainment and a Riverside Medical Staff comedian, is co-sponsored by Riverside Medical Center, the Waupaca Arts Board and The Waupaca Library Foundation. To register, call a (715) 258-1119 or visit www.thedacare.org.
During the evening, donations for the Women's Assistance Fund will be accepted and the silent auction of the Artful Bras will be promoted. The Save the Girls – an uplifting experience!! is an exhibit of artful bras being shown Oct. 1 through Nov. 10 in the Waupaca Public Library.
Saunders was inspired to create an artful bra when one of her sisters was diagnosed with breast cancer. She learned about an artful bra event in Minnesota and, with the help of donated jewelry, she made the artful bra “Jewels for Joan” for the Rochester event.
Saunders later presented the idea of an exhibit and fundraising event to benefit Waupaca women to the Waupaca Library Exhibit Committee. The idea was embraced, resulting in the exhibit which features artful bras created by Waupaca area artists, quilters and crafters who have donated their creations to benefit the Women’s Assistance Fund. Each artful bra memorializes one who has been lost to breast cancer, to honor a breast cancer survivor or as a message of strength and hope to those brave women who encounter this life changing disease. Saunders also used the remaining overflow of jewels to create a bra for the Waupaca Exhibit.
The Artful Bras will be auctioned via an ongoing silent auction to benefit the Women’s Assistance Fund, a program which assists women with paying for articles difficult to afford such as wigs, gas cards and medications. This program is offered to income eligible Waupaca County Women over the age of 35 and is administered through the Waupaca Human Services Department in conjunction with the Wisconsin Well Woman Program.
