Procedure Helps Obese Lose Weight, Eliminate Need for Certain Medications
Bariatric surgery can do a lot more than shrink your waistline – it can also substantially improve your health and help people get off medications for high blood pressure and diabetes.
Surgeons from Midwest Bariatric Solutions perform bariatric surgery at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, the only Fox Cities hospital to offer the procedure. Theda Clark’s bariatric program is accredited by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The surgeons from this leading program are coming to Shawano to discuss this treatment.
Recent studies have shown bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for type II diabetes and other diseases related to obesity, including high blood pressure and sleep apnea. Ninety-two percent of patients from Theda Clark’s program with type 2 diabetes no longer needed medication 24 months after surgery, which is higher than the national average of 83 percent. In addition, patients also saw a decline in sleep apnea (93 percent), the need for high blood pressure medication (72 percent), and reflux (92 percent).
A free informational session about bariatric surgery will be held from 4:15 to 7:30 p.m. on Mon., Sept. 10, at ThedaCare Physicians-Shawano.
