Teens to Learn About Responsible Babysitting

Riverside Medical Center (RMC) is offering two sessions of its Safe Sitter class, giving teens and preteens important information to help them become confident and competent caregivers.

“They really need to have knowledge to take that job seriously,” said Marci Reynolds, manager of Health and Wellness Department at RMC.

The program is taught by registered nurses and covers first aid; injury prevention; CPR; basic child-care skills such as diapering and feeding; management of problem behavior; and the business side of babysitting, among other topics. Teens will be required to attend both classes to receive a completion certificate.

The class helps participants understand what babysitting is all about. “They get to realize they are caring for young children who have a high frequency with problems” like choking and other safety issues,” Reynolds said.

Most parents in the community want to know their sitter is someone who is trained and can be trusted. “They can entrust their kids into that person’s care,” said Reynolds.

RMC has spring and summer class offerings:

  • The spring series is on Sat., March 17, and Sat,, March 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
  • The summer series runs Mon., July 23, Tues., July 24, and Wed., July 25 from 9 a.m. to noon.

All classes are held at RMC’s Maasch Education Center.

The class is open to girls and boys ages 11 to 13. The fee is $25 and advance registration is required. To register, call (715) 258-1119, or register online at www.thedacare.org. The RMC Safe Sitter program is co-sponsored by RMC Auxiliary.
