ThedaCare Workers Make Large Donation to Food Pantry
ThedaCare employees in New London collected more than 1,600 food items during a month-long holiday food drive held for the New London Community Cupboard.
“We decided to hold an additional holiday food drive because we know there is a real need in the community,” said food drive coordinator Mary Mathewson, nutrition services supervisor at New London Family Medical Center (NLFMC). “We’re proud of our employees for their generosity and spirit of giving this holiday season.”
Employees from NLFMC and ThedaCare Physicians-New London chipped in by donating food items between Nov. 14 and Dec. 16. In addition to the nonperishable food items, employees also donated more than $500 that was used to purchase 16 Thanksgiving turkeys and a dozen Christmas hams. Employees completed another food drive last summer, when they collected more than 2,200 food items.
“We really appreciate their donation and are very thankful to everyone who donates to help make our program a success, said Kim Ebert, director of the Community Cupboard. “The need is definitely increasing.”
Between 2005 and 2010, the number of those seeking help from the food pantry has doubled, Ebert added. The food pantry is now serving up to 45 families per week. “We are serving four to five new families each week,” she said.
ThedaCare’s various divisions in New London competed against each other to see which could collect the most food. The hospital’s central scheduling and the admissions departments took first place, while the ER and ambulance department came in second, Mathewson said.
