ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano Receives Birnbaum Quality Award

Safety, Timeliness, Effectiveness, Efficiency, Equity, and Patient-Centeredness was Scored

ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano is a winner of the 2017 Vizient Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award. The award recognizes ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano for demonstrating superior quality and safety performance as measured by the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study, which has been conducted annually since 2005. The award was presented on Thurs., Sept. 14 during the 2017 Vizient Clinical Connections Summit in Denver.

“Receiving this award is an honor because it recognizes the extraordinary expertise and compassion of our hospital staff in caring for our patients,” said Bill Schmidt, CEO of ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. “We appreciate being named as a model for other hospitals across the country that aspire to excellent quality and safety.”

This year, 107 academic medical centers and 161 community hospitals were included in the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. The study helps academic medical centers and community hospitals identify structures and processes that deliver high quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care activity. It measured performance based on six domains of care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and patient-centeredness. The composite scoring system uses patient-level performance data from a variety of sources, including Vizient databases, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network.

“Leading hospitals today are using advanced analytics and innovative technology to deliver superior patient experiences and clinical outcomes while managing costs,” said Byron Jobe, president and chief administrative officer for Vizient. “ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano exemplifies a leadership style that is focused on a culture of collaboration and adaptability. We congratulate them on their achievement.”
