Opioid Awareness

It only takes a little to lose a lot.

Opioid dependency is a national crisis even affecting Northeast and Central Wisconsin communities where we call home.

The ThedaCare team wants to make sure patients understand how to use opioids safely and where to find help.

What can you do to help prevent opioid dependency?

Despite the risks, opioids can play a role in alleviating pain in certain circumstances like major injuries or post surgical recovery. Your ThedaCare doctor can help you understand all of your options when it comes to pain medications. Before leaving the office ask your doctor about opioid alternatives and the risks involved with use.

Questions to discuss with your doctor may include:

- Are alternative medications available?
- What is the safest recommended dose based on your condition?
- How long should you use the opioid medication?
- What is the long-term care plan to help manage pain without opioids?
